John Nieto
John Nieto (1936–2018) was an American contemporary artist who concentrated on Native American themes including Native American tribal representatives as well as indigenous wildlife. He was a longtime resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Biography John Wesley Nieto was the 3rd oldest of 14 children born to Natalia Venegas Nieto, who was of Mescalero Apache and Hispanic descent in Denver, Colorado. His father Simon Nieto worked for the U.S. Office of Censorship during WW II, later became a Methodist minister. Nieto's roots can be traced back over 300 years and his work reflects his Hispanic and American Indian ancestry. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Southern Methodist University in 1959. Work and recognition Nieto presented his painting “Delegate to the White House” to President Reagan in the Oval Office of the White House. which hung during the President’s term in office and later included in the presidential library. In the United States, the presidential library system is a nationwide network of 15 libraries administered by the Office of Presidential Libraries, which is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). New Mexico Museum Of Art
The New Mexico Museum of Art is an art museum in Santa Fe governed by the state of New Mexico. It is one of four state-run museums in Santa Fe that are part of the Museum of New Mexico. It is located at 107 West Palace Avenue, one block off the historic Santa Fe Plaza. It was given its current name in 2007, having previously been referred to as The Museum of Fine Arts. History The building was designed by architect Isaac Rapp and completed in 1917. It is an example of Pueblo Revival Style architecture, and one of Santa Fe's best-known representations of the synthesis of Native American and Spanish Colonial design styles. Native American Preparatory School
The Native American Preparatory School Inc. (NAPS) was a residential university preparatory school located in unincorporated San Miguel County, New Mexico, in proximity to South San Ysidro. The school had a Rowe PO Box. The school's website also listed an office in Santa Fe. History The school originated from a summer program established by Cushing Academy, starting in 1988, being held in multiple locations. In 1994 the owner of the land which housed NAPS, Larry Wilson, sold it to the entity that would establish the school. Publisher Richard Ettinger, son of the founder of Prentice Hall, established the school in 1995 with the goal of increasing the number of Native American students attending Ivy League colleges. The property had a cost of $6 million to develop. Wheelwright Museum Of The American Indian
The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is a museum devoted to Native American arts. It is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico and was founded in 1937 by Mary Cabot Wheelwright, who came from Boston, and Hastiin Klah, a Navajo singer and medicine man. History Wheelwright and Klah were introduced in 1921 and quickly became close friends. It was not long before they determined to create a permanent record of Klah's and other singers’ ritual knowledge. Klah dictated and Wheelwright recorded the Navajo Creation Story and other great narratives that form the basis of Navajo religion. While Wheelwright concentrated on the spoken word in Navajo ritual, Frances (“Franc”) Newcomb focused on the sandpaintings that are created and destroyed during healing ceremonies, recreating versions of them in tempera on paper.
