John Morice (died 1362)
Sir John Morice, Morris or Moriz (died 1362) was an English-born statesman of the fourteenth century whose career was mainly spent in Ireland. He is remembered chiefly for his enthusiastic, if not very successful, efforts to reform the Irish administration,Ball, F. Elrington ''"The Judges in Ireland 1221-1921"'' London John Murray 1926 Vol.1 pp.78-9 and for the fact that a portrait of him still exists. This is said to be the earliest portrait of an Irish judge and can be viewed by the public. Early career He was born in Bedfordshire. His family are said to have been gentry who had a good estate but lacked influential political connections. He began his career in the service of the powerful Anglo-French nobleman Aymer de Valence, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, and served him intermittently until Pembroke's death in 1324. Appleby (UK Parliament Constituency)
Appleby was a United Kingdom constituencies, parliamentary constituency in the county of Westmorland in England. It existed for two separate periods: from 1295 to 1832, and from 1885 to 1918. Appleby was enfranchised as parliamentary borough in 1295, and abolished by the Great Reform Act of 1832. It returned two Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Members of Parliament (MPs) using the Plurality-at-large voting, bloc vote system. It was represented in the House of Commons of England until Acts of Union 1707, 1707, in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800, and finally in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832. Newport (Cornwall) (UK Parliament Constituency)
Newport was a rotten borough situated in Cornwall. It is now the suburb of Newport within the town of Launceston, which was itself also a parliamentary borough at the same period. It is also referred to as Newport Iuxta Launceston, to distinguish it from other constituencies named ''Newport.'' History From 1529 until it was abolished by the great reform act of 1832, Newport returned two Members of Parliament. Until the early 18th century, the right to vote was held by all inhabitants paying scot and lot, but subsequently it was converted to a burgage franchise, meaning that the right to vote was tied to ownership of certain properties within the borough, which could be bought and sold at will. This reduced the number of qualified voters: under the scot and lot qualification around 70 people had had the right to vote, but by 1831 the number was only about 12. John Morrice
John Morrice (1811 – 20 February 1875) was an Australian politician. He was born in Jamaica to estate agent David Morrice and Anne White, and he was educated in England. He later settled at Berrima in New South Wales, and on 9 November 1838 married Jane Osborne, with whom he had twelve children. Morrice held land on the Murrumbidgee River and cattle runs on the Lachlan River, and during the gold rush was successful selling picks and shovels, becoming substantially wealthy. In 1860 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Camden, serving until his retirement in 1872.
