John Moran (basketball)
John Moran is an American coach who was notable for serving as head coach of Shell Turbo Chargers in the PBA. Coaching career A former assistant of Bob Knight at Indiana, Moran was hired as head coach of Shell Turbo Chargers in the PBA, replacing Perry Ronquillo. But due to Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines' skepticism of hiring non-Filipino coaches for the league, Moran's appointment was expected to be under protest, but the association let Moran coach NBA. Indiana Hoosiers Men's Basketball
The Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball team represents Indiana University Bloomington in NCAA Division I college basketball and competes in the Big Ten Conference. The Shell Turbo Chargers were a Philippine Basketball Association team from 1985 to 2005. It won four PBA championships, two from 1998 to 1999. Shell sold its franchise to PBL team Welcoat Dragons, Welcoat Paints in February 2006. Robert Montgomery Knight (born October 25, 1940) is an American former basketball coach. Nicknamed "the General", Knight won 902 NCAA Division I men's college basketball games, a record at the time of his retirement, and currently fourth all-time, behind his former player and assistant coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, Roy Williams of University of North Carolina Men’s Basketball, and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse, of whom Boeheim is still active. Knight is best known as the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 1971 to 2000. He also coached at Texas Tech (2001–2008) and at Army (1965–1971). The Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines (BCAP) is an organization for Filipino coaches in the Philippines. Background The Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines' stated goal is to protect the interest of local Filipino basketball coaches in the Philippines. They are largely involve in the 1990s case which got elevated to the Supreme Court which made it mostly impossible for foreigners to be a head coach in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). They lodge a protest against the appointment of American tactician Tim Cone as Alaska head coach in 1989. Cone would return to the PBA after acquiring permanent residency. Richard Alvarez (born October 30, 1980) is a Japanese-born Filipino former professional basketball player and coach. He last played for the Kia Picanto of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He was the first overall pick of 2004 PBA Draft by the Shell Turbo Chargers. He is currently an assistant coach for the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters of the PBA. Leovino R. Austria (born March 14, 1958), better known as Leo Austria, is a Filipino former professional basketball player and the current head coach of the San Miguel Beermen in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Playing career Austria played his college basketball for the Lyceum of the Philippines University while also suiting up in the commercial Philippine Amateur Basketball League via Masagana 99. Pauliasi Taulava (born March 2, 1973) is a Tongan-born Filipino professional basketball player for the NLEX Road Warriors of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He is the oldest active player in the league.
