John Moore (Australian Jurist)
Sir John Cochrane Moore Companion of the Order of Australia, AC (5 November 191530 August 1998) was an Australian jurist. In 1973 he became the presiding judge of the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission. Under the Australian system, this commission served as both an arbitrator in labour disputes and as a court for the enforcement of certain provisions of the Commonwealth's labour laws. He was Knight Bachelor, knighted in 1976 Birthday Honours, 1976 for "distinguished service to law", and appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1986. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. The Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC), known from 1956 to 1973 as the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission and from 1973 to 1988 as the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission, was a tribunal with powers under the Workplace Relations Act 1996 (and equivalent earlier legislation) that existed from 1956 until 2010. The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system. Companions Of The Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is the only Australian order of chivalry. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, to recognise Australian citizens and other persons for achievement, meritorious service, or for both. At that time, Companion of the Order of Australia was the highest of three grades of the Order (Companion, Officer, Member). On 24 May 1976, the grade of Knight or Dame of the Order was established, displacing Companion as the highest grade. On 3 June 1986, the Knight/Dame grade was abolished, and Companion was once again the highest grade. On 25 March 2014, the Knight/Dame grade was re-established, Companion once again being relegated to the second highest grade of the Order. The Knight/Dame grade was again abolished on 2 November 2015. Divisions The Order has two divisions; General and Military.
