John Miles (Australian Politician)
John Gould Miles (5 March 1930 – 29 December 2010) was an Australian politician and member of the Victorian Legislative Council for Templestowe Province representing the Liberal Party of Australia (Victorian Division), Liberal Party from April 1985 until his retirement in August 1992. Miles was the grandson of Edward Miles (Tasmanian politician), Edward Miles, Tasmanian Free Trade Party politician, Minister for Mines, and Siam (Thailand) tin miner. Miles was educated at Camberwell Grammar School and the University of Melbourne. He was Senior housemaster at Scotch College, Melbourne, Scotch College from 1954 to 1976. He subsequently served as a Management Consultant prior to entering Parliament. Miles was a life member and former captain and coach of the Hawthorn-East Melbourne Cricket Club. John Miles (businessman)
John Miles (16 March 1816 – 5 May 1886) was an English businessman who was master of the Stationers Company and a director of the New River Company. He was a major landowner in Friern Barnet and Whetstone in north London in the second half of the nineteenth century and was instrumental in the development of those areas. Early life and family John Miles was born at 16 Bridge Street in Blackfriars, London, on 16 March 1816. He married Sophia and together they had children Sophia, Charles, and Henry when they were living at Chessington, Surrey. They later moved to Hampstead and to Friern Barnet where they had children Eliza and Amy. Career Miles began his career with Simkin and Marshall, booksellers, in 1829, eventually becoming a partner in the firm. John Campbell Miles (5 May 1883, Richmond, Melbourne – 4 December 1965, Ringwood, Victoria) was an Australian prospecting, prospector and pastoral worker who discovered the mineralisation upon which the Mount Isa Mines were established in Queensland. Biography John Campbell Miles was born on 5 May 1883 in Richmond, Melbourne to Thomas Miles and Fanny Louisa Miles (née Chancellor). He was the eighth of nine children. He was a wanderer and an adventurer from the time he ran away from school to work with a bootmaker. Blainey listed his quick progression of jobs as ploughman, miner, carter, railway navvy, wild-pig hunter and windmill repairer. John Myles, also known as John Miles, (c. 1621–1683) was the founder of Swansea, Massachusetts, and the founder of the earliest recorded Baptist churches in Wales (UK) and Massachusetts (US). John Myles was born in Wales around 1621 and was educated at Brasenose College at Oxford University. He then went to London where he visited the Glasshouse church, an early Particular Baptist (Reformed Baptist) congregation. Myles then returned to Ilston in Wales, where he served as a minister from 1649 to 1662 and he served as a "tryer" for ministers under Oliver Cromwell's government. After the restoration of the monarchy and requirement for all ministers to adhere to the Book of Common Prayer, Myles left England for the Plymouth Colony in the 1660s. John 'Smoaker' Miles was a notable "bather" in Brighthelmstone (later called Brighton, England). The male occupation of "bather" and the female equivalent of "dipper" were popular in Georgian era in Britain where the custom of sea bathing grew in popularity. John 'Smoaker' Miles was born in Brighthelmstone in 1728, the son of George and Sarah Miles. He rose to fame when he became the bather to the Prince of Wales, teaching him to swim and becoming his friend. The Prince of Wales who later became George IV commissioned John Russell to paint a portrait of Miles which is now part of the Royal Collection in Buckingham Palace. A copy of the portrait also hangs in the Kings Apartments at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. John DeBras Miles (June 7, 1832– March 20, 1925) was an American Indian agent at the Kickapoo people Agency and at the Darlington Agency for the Cheyenne and Arapaho. Early life and family John DeBras Miles was born at Dayton, Ohio, June 7, 1832, to David and Susanna (DeBras) Miles. His family were members of the Society of Friends and he grew up in Miami County, Ohio. He attended business college in Richmond, Indiana and when he was seventeen took a job teaching. When he was twenty years old he entered the merchandise and milling industry. On November 25, 1857 John married Lucy Davis in Grant, Indiana. Miles Sound System
Miles Sound System (MSS), formerly known as Audio Interface Library (AIL), is a sound software system primarily for video games and used mostly as an alternative for low-end audio chipsets. It uses little CPU time while providing adequate audio output. It was originally a middleware driver library for soundcards to use in DOS applications when no viable alternative was available. Epic Games Tools (formerly RAD Game Tools) acquired the technology from Miles Design in 1995. The 1992 AIL version 2 for DOS has been released by John Miles as open-source (public domain without restrictions) in 2000.
