John Metcalfe (composer)
John Metcalfe (born 6 August 1964) is a British-based composer, arranger and viola, violist, member of the Duke Quartet and a former member of the band The Durutti Column. Biography Metcalfe was born in New Zealand and moved to the United Kingdom as a child. Metcalfe studied viola at the Royal Northern College of Music and later at the Hochschule in Berlin. During this period he joined Vini Reilly in The Durutti Column. Metcalfe's unique style is a result of his extensive experience in classical, pop and electronica. As violist with the Duke Quartet he released many CDs and toured worldwide. Metcalfe's string arrangements played by the Dukes feature on many albums by pop artists including Morrissey, Simple Minds, The Pretenders, Coldplay and Blur (band), Blur. Metcalfe was instrumental in the formation of the record label Factory Records#Factory Classical, Factory Classical, an offshoot of Tony Wilson's Factory Records. John Metcalfe (footballer)
John Metcalfe (2 June 1935 – February 1996) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Birmingham City, York City and Walsall. Metcalfe was born in the Acocks Green district of Birmingham. He joined Birmingham City as an amateur in June 1951 and turned professional the following year. He made his debut in the Second Division on 3 January 1953, aged 17 years 6 months, deputising for Billy Wardle in a game away at Fulham which Birmingham lost 3–1.Matthews, p. 188. He played once more that season, again standing in for Wardle, but despite remaining with the club until the end of the 1956–57 season, that was the last time he appeared for the first-team. John Metcalfe (16 May 1901 – 7 February 1982) was an Australian librarian, educator and author. He was the Principal Librarian at the Public Library of New South Wales (now State Library of New South Wales) from 1942 until 1958 and University Librarian at the University of New South Wales from 1959–1966. He was involved in the establishment and development of the Australian Institute of Librarians (AIL), the Free Library Movement and education for librarianship in Australia. Major General John Francis Metcalfe, (30 June 1908 – 11 June 1975) was a British Army officer who served in the Second World War and later became General Officer Commanding Aldershot District. Military career Educated at Radley College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Metcalfe was commissioned into the Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) in 1928. By the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, Metcalfe was attending the Staff College, Quetta, later becoming an instructor at the college, in 1942. He was appointed commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, Queen's Royal Regiment in 1944 and brigadier responsible for maintenance at Headquarters Allied Land Forces in South East Asia in 1945.
