John McClelland (doctor)
Sir John McClelland (1805–1883) was a British medical doctor with interests in geology and biology, who worked for the East India Company. In 1835 he was sent on a mission (Tea Committee) to identify if tea could be grown in north-eastern India along with Nathaniel Wallich and William Griffith. This mission ran into troubles with the members of the group. McClelland was appointed 1836 as the secretary of the "Coal Committee", the forerunner of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), formed to explore possibilities to exploit Indian coal. He was the first to propose hiring professional geologists for the task. He was also involved in surveys of forests and his reports led to the establishment of the Forest Department in India. He also served as an interim superintendent of the Calcutta Botanical Garden from 1846 to 1847 and was editor of the ''Calcutta Journal of Natural History'' from 1841–1847. John Bonar McClelland (5 March 1935 – 15 June 2024) was an English professional footballer who scored 102 goals from 373 games playing in the Football League for Manchester City, Lincoln City, Queens Park Rangers, Portsmouth and Newport County A.F.C., Newport County. He played as an outside right. McClelland was born in Bradford, and began his professional football career with Manchester City. He joined Lincoln City in September 1958, in part exchange for George Hannah (footballer born 1928), George Hannah, and in his second season was the club's leading scorer with 18 goals. John McClelland (footballer, Born 1955)
John McClelland (born 7 December 1955) is a former Northern Ireland international footballer who played for several teams during a 23-year career. He worked for Leeds United as part of the tour groups for Elland Road. Club career McClelland played for Portadown, Cardiff City, Bangor City (he was Welsh Cup runner up with both of these clubs), and Mansfield Town, before signing for Rangers for £90,000 in June 1981. There he won two Scottish League Cup winner's medals, and was twice a Scottish Cup runner up. In November 1984 Watford paid £225,000 for his services. During his five years at Vicarage Road he was voted Watford Player of the Season twice. John McClelland (1766–1849) was an officer in the War of 1812. He was the son of American Revolutionary War officer Lieutenant-Colonel John B. McClelland, who was a casualty of Colonel Crawford's ill-fated Sandusky Expedition. Early life McClelland was born in September 1766 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania (later to become Bedford, afterward Westmoreland, and finally Fayette County) to Lt. Colonel John B. McClelland (1734–1782) and Martha Dale (1741–1822), near the Brown Settlement at Redstone Creek, which was referred to as Union Township at the time. He married Rachel Orr (1770–1843) in 1787. John Carman McClelland (September 22, 1951 – June 1, 2022) was a Canadian politician in Ontario. He was an Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1987 to 1995 who represented the riding of Brampton North. He was subsequently an unsuccessful Progressive Conservative candidate in the 2007 provincial election.
