John McClain
John McClain is a retired American sportswriter. He was the winner of the 2006 Dick McCann Memorial Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Early life and education McClain grew up in Waco, Texas and graduated from Baylor University in 1975. Career McClain began his career writing for the Waco Tribune-Herald in 1973 before moving to the Houston Chronicle in 1976. During his career, he covered the Houston Oilers (until their move to Tennessee), the Houston Texans, and the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Seniors Committee, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Dick McCann Memorial Award
The Bill Nunn Jr. Award is bestowed annually by the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA) to a reporter for their "long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage". It is named after Bill Nunn Jr., who worked for 22 years at the ''Pittsburgh Courier''. The award was created in 1969 and was originally named after Dick McCann, who was the first director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Presentation of the award is made annually at the Pro Football Hall Enshrinement Ceremony. Prior to 2014, the presentation was made at the Enshrinees Dinner. Houston Oilers
The Houston Oilers were a professional American football team that played in Houston from its founding in 1960 to 1996 before relocating to Memphis, and later Nashville, Tennessee becoming the Tennessee Titans. The Houston Aeros were a professional ice hockey team in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1972 to 1978. Franchise history The Aeros were originally slated to play in Dayton, Ohio, as a charter member of the WHA. However, Dayton residents were indifferent at best to a WHA team, and while there were questions regarding whether a U.S. market with less than a million people and a stagnating economy would support a major league hockey franchise in the long term, the more critical short-term problem was that Dayton did not have a suitable arena.
