John Marshall (eye Laser Scientist)
John Marshall MBE, FMedSci, PhD, DSc, FRCPath, FRSB, FRCOphth(Hon), FRCOptom (Hon), FARVO (born 1943 in Woking, England) is a British medical scientist and inventor. Currently he is the Frost Professor of Ophthalmology at the Institute of Ophthalmology UCL and Emeritus Professor King's College London. He is a pioneer of laser eye surgery. / EU0224322B1 1986 / EU 0293126 (1988) Education Marshall's earliest years were in war torn London, prior to moving to St Pauls Cray near Orpington in Kent. He had primary tuberculosis as a child and spent some years away from the family in a variety of sanatoria and as a consequence was late starting school at the age of seven. He graduated with a BSc in Zoology from Sir John Cass College, London in 1965 and then began his 50-year career in eye research starting at the Institute of Ophthalmology. Excimer Laser
An excimer laser, sometimes more correctly called an exciplex laser, is a form of ultraviolet laser which is commonly used in the production of microelectronic devices, semiconductor based integrated circuits or "chips", eye surgery, and micromachining. Since 1960s excimer lasers are widely used in high-resolution photolithography machines, one of the critical technologies required for microelectronic chip manufacturing. Terminology and history The term excimer is short for 'excited dimer', while exciplex is short for 'excited complex'. Most excimer lasers are of the noble gas halide type, for which the term ''excimer'' is, strictly speaking, a misnomer. (Although less commonly used, the proper term for such is an exciplex laser.) The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) is a medical society in the United Kingdom, headquartered in London. History The Society was established in 1805 as Medical and Chirurgical Society of London, meeting in two rooms in barristers’ chambers at Gray's Inn and then moving to Lincoln's Inn Fields where it stayed for 25 years. Harold Ridley (ophthalmologist)
Sir Nicholas Harold Lloyd Ridley (10 July 1906 – 25 May 2001) was an English ophthalmologist who invented the intraocular lens and pioneered intraocular lens surgery for cataract patients. Early years Nicholas Harold Lloyd Ridley was born in Kibworth Harcourt, Leicestershire, the son of Nicholas Charles Ridley and his wife Margaret, née Parker; he had a younger brother, Olden. Harold had a stammer which he was largely able to manage. As a child he met and sat on the lap of Florence Nightingale, a close friend of his mother. He was educated at Charterhouse School before studying at Pembroke College, Cambridge from 1924 to 1927, and completed his medical training in 1930 at St Thomas' Hospital. William Mackenzie (ophthalmologist)
William Mackenzie (April 1791 – July 1868) was a Scottish ophthalmologist. He wrote ''Practical Treatise of the Diseases of the Eye'', one of the first British textbooks of ophthalmology. Life Mackenzie was born in Queen Street, Glasgow, and studied medicine at the University of Glasgow and the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. From 1840 to 1848 he studied in London and in Europe. He obtained his medical doctorate under Georg Joseph Beer at the University of Vienna, and returned to Britain in 1848. In 1849, Mackenzie settled in Glasgow and began practice as a physician. Edward Nettleship
Edward Nettleship Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS Fellow of the Chemical Society, FCS (3 March 1845 – 30 October 1913) was an English ophthalmologist. He was a native of Kettering. After finishing his medical studies at King's College London, Nettleship became an assistant to Jonathan Hutchinson (1828–1913) at the London Hospital, and a coworker with Warren Tay (1843–1927) at the Moorfields Eye Hospital. Later, he spent nearly twenty years at St Thomas' Hospital, St. Thomas Hospital in London, where he was mentor to Charles Usher, Charles Howard Usher (1865–1942). Macular Edema
Macular edema occurs when fluid and protein deposits collect on or under the macula of the eye (a yellow central area of the retina) and causes it to thicken and swell ( edema). The swelling may distort a person's central vision, because the macula holds tightly packed cones that provide sharp, clear, central vision to enable a person to see detail, form, and color that is directly in the centre of the field of view. Cause The causes of macular edema are numerous and different causes may be inter-related. *It is commonly associated with diabetes.
