John Malcolm Campbell
John Malcolm Campbell (July 25, 1874 – May 16, 1951) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Victoria in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1937 to 1949. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. Campbell was born in 1874 at Ingonish, Nova Scotia. He married Carrie Giles. He was superintendent of St. Paul's Island from 1908–1919, and Sable Island from 1919–1921. Campbell entered provincial politics in the 1937 election, defeating Conservative incumbent Frederick W. Baldwin by 586 votes in the Victoria riding. He was re-elected in the 1941, and 1945 elections. He did not reoffer in the 1949 election. Ingonish
Ingonish is a popular tourist destination in Victoria County, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. The regional economy is tied to fishing and tourism. Tourist facilities include Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the Keltic Lodge, a downhill skiing centre, and a public golf course, the Highlands Links. History The name may be from the Portuguese or Mi'kmaq languages. French explorer Nicolas Denys visited the area in the 1600s, and he made note of the area's potential as a base of operations for French fishing fleets having good fishing though a harsh coastline and no safe harbour. In 1854, local farmers plowing a field found an Acadian chapel bell, upon which was inscribed: An 1885 English translation reads: The bell was described as being "nearly as large around as an ordinary flour barrel" and weighed 586 pounds. Sable Island
Sable Island (french: île de Sable, literally "island of sand") is a small Canadian island situated southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and about southeast of the closest point of mainland Nova Scotia in the North Atlantic Ocean. The island is staffed year round by three federal government staff, rising during summer months when research projects and tourism increase. Notable for its role in early Canadian history and the Sable Island horse, the island is protected and managed by Parks Canada, which must grant permission prior to any visit. Sable Island is part of District 7 of the Halifax Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia. The island is also a protected National Park Reserve and an Important Bird Area. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party currently forms the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of Zach Churchill. The party was in power most recently from the 2013 election until the 2021 election. Origins The party is descended from the pre-Confederation Reformers in Nova Scotia who coalesced around Joseph Howe demanding the institution of responsible government.
