John Maines
John Maines (born 10 December 1948) is a musician, trombone player and active figure in the Brass band (British style), British brass band movement as a performer, conductor, tutor, Master of Ceremonies, compere and concert presenter. Biography Maines was born in Warrington, England, Warrington on 10 December 1948. He was raised in Winwick, Lancashire and later Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. After initial lessons from his father, his early musical career started as a Alto horn, tenor horn player with the Prescot Cables Band near St Helens, Merseyside, St. Helens. After a move to trombone he joined the Wigan Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Boys Club and Cammell Laird band in Birkenhead, Cheshire. As a young player he became the Northern England, North of England Junior Solo Champion and was invited to play for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. Brass Band (British Style)
In Britain, a brass band (known regionally as a silver band or colliery band) is a musical ensemble comprising a standardized range of brass and percussion instruments. The modern form of the brass band in the United Kingdom dates back to the 19th century, with a vibrant tradition of competition based around communities and local industry, with colliery bands being particularly notable. The Stalybridge Old Band (still in existence) was formed in 1809 and was perhaps the first civilian brass band in the world. Bands using the British instrumentation are the most common form of brass band in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, and are also widespread in continental Europe, Japan and North America. ''Radio On'' is a 1979 film directed by Christopher Petit. It is a rare example of a British road movie, shot in black and white by Wim Wenders' assistant cameraman Martin Schäfer and featuring music from a number of new wave bands of the time, as well as established artists such as Kraftwerk, Devo and David Bowie. It is a journey through late 1970s Britain by way of a road trip from London to Bristol, with Robert, a DJ (played by David Beames) attempting to investigate the suicide of his brother. The radio station where Robert is a disc jockey was based on the United Biscuits Network, which broadcast to factories owned by United Biscuits. In his 2022 book Roadrunner Nick Gilbert revisits the film, the route and its resonances 43 years later and includes contributions from Petit and others involved in the film.
