John Maher (Tipperary Hurler)
John Maher (26 June 1908 – 11 July 1990) was an Irish hurler. At club level he played for Thurles Sarsfields, captaining the club on a number of occasions, and was the captain of the Tipperary senior hurling team that won the 1945 All-Ireland Championship. Widely regarded as one of the Thurles Sarsfields club's all-time greats, Maher's career spanned three decades. During that time he won nine Tipperary Senior Championship medals, including two as club captain in 1944 and 1945. Maher made his first appearance for the Tipperary senior hurling team as the youngest member of their 1930 All-Ireland Championship-winning team. Over the following fifteen years he was a regular member of the half-back line, and won further All-Ireland Championship medals in 1937 and as captain of the team in 1945. Thurles Sarsfields GAA
Thurles Sarsfields is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Both hurling and Gaelic football are played in the "Mid-Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club is centred in the town of Thurles at Semple Stadium. The club was founded in 1881 and is the most honoured club in the history of the county championship with 36 County Titles. Pa Bourke
Patrick "Pa" Bourke (born 18 May 1988 in Thurles, County Tipperary) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Thurles Sarsfields and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team. Early life Pa Bourke was born in Thurles, County Tipperary in 1988. He was born into a family steeped in hurling history as his grandfather, John Maher, captained Tipperary to the All-Ireland title in 1945, having already won senior All-Ireland medals as far back as 1930 and 1937. Bourke was educated locally at the Christian Brothers secondary school in the town, where his hurling skills were first developed. He was a key member of the team in 2005 when his school were defeated by St. Flannans of Ennis in the final of the Dr. Harty Cup. Fitzgerald Stadium ( ga, Staid a' Ghearaltaigh) is the principal GAA stadium in Killarney, Ireland, and is the home championship venue for the Kerry senior football team. John Joe Callanan
John Joseph Callanan (10 March 1894 – 19 December 1970) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-forward for the Tipperary and Dublin senior teams. Born in Thurles, County Tipperary, Callanan first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-four when he first linked up with the Tipperary senior team. He joined the senior panel during the 1918 championship and was a regular member of the Tipperary and Dublin teams at various times for over a decade. During that time he won two All-Ireland medals, two Leinster medals and one Munster medal. The All-Ireland-winning captain in 1930, Callanan was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial Callanan won one Railway Cup medal. At club level he was a one-time championship medallist with Thurles Sarsfields while he also played with Collegians. Martin Kennedy (hurler)
Martin Kennedy (20 November 1898 – 17 July 1983) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Toomevara and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team from 1922 until 1936. Kennedy is regarded as one of Tipperary's greatest-ever players. Playing career Club Kennedy first played club hurling as a goalkeeper with the Borrisoleigh club. He had been born in that portion of the parish and contested two county intermediate finals before transferring his allegiance to the Toomevara club in 1919. It was only when the regular full-forward on that team got injured that Kennedy was used in this position and he went on to enjoy much success. He won his first senior county title in 1919 and added further county medals in 1923, 1930 and 1931. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league.
