John MacDonald (Australian Politician)
John Valentine (Jack) MacDonald (14 February 1880 – 17 August 1937) was a New Zealand-born Australian politician. MacDonald was born in Opotiki, New Zealand, the son of an Australian volunteer in the New Zealand Wars and veteran of the 1891 Australian shearers' strike. He completed his early education in New Zealand before his family migrated to New South Wales, whereafter he attended state schools. He spent time as a shearer in New South Wales and Victoria before returning to New Zealand and entering the printing trade. He began as a journeyman compositor, but shifted into journalism over time, working for the ''Wairoa Guardian'' and the Napier-based ''The Daily Telegraph'' before rising to become chief compositor and acting editor of the ''Gisborne Herald''. He was also involved in the Typographical Association in its early days and taught shorthand at the Gisborne Technical College in 1903–04. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher. His activism started when he campaigned against the refusal of Brewer Spinks, an employer in Blaenau Ffestiniog, to permit his staff to speak Welsh. John MacDonald Of Inverness
Pipe Major John MacDonald (26 July 1865 - 6 June 1953) was a Scottish bagpipe player. Personal life John MacDonald was born on 26 July 1865 at Glentruim, near Kingussie in Scotland, to Alexander Macdonald and Jane Lamond, who had married in 1861. He was the third of nine or possibly ten children. John was first taught by his father, who was an accomplished player and Piper to MacPherson of Glentruim, and his uncles William and Duncan. Later he was taught by Malcolm Macpherson. After leaving school he was employed as a gamekeeper, until in 1899 he joined the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders as a Pipe major in a part-time role, and moved to Inverness. He gave lessons around Scotland arranged by the Piobaireachd Society, and in from 1910 became involved in formal Army teaching with the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming. Inspector-General of Hospitals and Fleets Sir John Denis Macdonald (26 October 1826 – 7 February 1908) was a naval surgeon. Navy career He was born in Cork, County Cork, Ireland, the son of James Macdonald, an artist, art critic and one of the claimants of the Annandale Peerage. Upon the death of the last legitimate heir of the MacDonald's of Castleton, Isle of Skye, Scotland, James Macdonald inherited that title, as the nearest surviving legitimate male kin. John was educated at Cork school of medicine and King's College, London, where he was awarded M.R.C.S.Eng in 1849. He later was awarded M.D. from the University of St. Andrews. The University of New South Wales Regiment (UNSWR) is, as of 2018, an Army Reserve Recruit training unit under the command of the 8th Brigade. Unit History The University of New South Wales Regiment was founded as the New South Wales University of Technology Regiment in 1952, while Army Headquarters' approval to form the unit had been granted in July 1951. The new university and regiment were sensitive at the time to the standing it had in relation to the historic traditions of Sydney University, and thus the regiment was founded along the lines of the Sydney University Regiment. While the first regimental headquarters were in Mews Street, Ultimo from 1952, in 1954 the vice-chancellor of the university Philip Baxter, who had strongly supported the regiment's creation, provided it with a base on campus on High Street. Major-General John Frederick Matheson Macdonald (1907 – 29 May 1979) was a senior British Army officer. Military career Macdonald entered the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, from where he was commissioned into the King's Own Scottish Borderers on 1 September 1927 and served in the Second World War. He commanded the 1st Battalion, the King's Own Scottish Borderers on its deployment to Korea in April 1951 and then took command of the 28th Commonwealth Infantry Brigade in Korea in October 1951. His brigade saw action at the First Battle of Maryang-san in October 1951 during the Korean War. He went on to be commander of 31st Infantry Brigade in November 1952, Deputy Director of Quartering at the War Office in January 1956 and Chief of Staff at Scottish Command in March 1957. Lieutenant General Sir John Macdonald GCB (before 179528 March 1850) was Adjutant-General to the Forces. Military career John Macdonald was commissioned into the 89th Regiment of Foot on 15 April 1795. He became lieutenant the regiment 2 February 1796, and captain 22 October 1803. John MacDonald Of Garth
John MacDonald of Garth (1771 – 25 January 1866) was a colourful character involved in the Canadian fur trade. He was an enthusiastic duellist and a shrewd businessman who became a partner in the North West Company and a member of the Beaver Club at Montreal, Lower Canada. In an account of his exploits, he was described as having "indomitable courage... brave, reckless and domineering, with a decided tendency to seek redress with his own hands," characteristics that made him well-suited to his profession. Built in 1816, his home, Inverarden House, near Cornwall, Upper Canada, was later designated a National Historic Site of Canada. According to the 1997 book ''Lords of the North'', by James McDonell and Robert Campbell, the Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton, Alberta was named for him.
