John M. K. Paterson
John M. K. Paterson (8 October 1922 – 6 August 2009) was a Scottish minister. He served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1984. Life He was born in Leeds on 8 October 1922 to Scottish parents who returned to Scotland in his childhood. He was educated at Hillhead High School in Glasgow. In the Second World War he served as a fighter pilot with the RAF. After the war he trained in insurance and worked in East Africa. In 1958 he heard David Steel (Church of Scotland minister), Very Rev David Steel preach in Nairobi and was inspired to join the ministry. He returned to Scotland to study divinity at the University of Edinburgh. His first role was as assistant to Rev Leonard Small at St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh. In 1964 he was ordained and served as minister of St John's in Bathgate. In 1970 he was translated to St Paul's in Milngavie and remained there until his retirement in 1987. Moderator Of The General Assembly Of The Church Of Scotland
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland is the ministers and elders of the Church of Scotland, minister or elder chosen to moderate (chair) the annual General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, which is held for a week in Edinburgh every year. After chairing the Assembly, the Moderator then spends the following year representing the Church of Scotland at civic events, and visiting congregations and projects in Scotland and beyond. Because the Church of Scotland is Scotland's national church, and a presbyterian church has no bishops, the Moderator is – arguably alongside the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland – the most prominent figure in the life of Church of Scotland adherents.
