John M. Evans
John Morgan Evans (January 7, 1863 – March 12, 1946) was an American Democratic politician. Biography He was born in Sedalia, Missouri. Evans went to the United States Military Academy and then graduated from University of Missouri. He studied law and practiced law in Missoula, Montana. Evans was judge of the police court, register of the United States Land Office, and served as Mayor of Missoula, Montana. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives from Montana and served from March 4, 1913 to March 4, 1921. He was defeated in his bid for re-election in 1920, but regained his seat in the 1922 election and served from March 4, 1923 to March 4, 1933. United States Land Office
The General Land Office (GLO) was an independent agency of the United States government responsible for public domain lands in the United States. It was created in 1812 to take over functions previously conducted by the United States Department of the Treasury. Starting with the passage of the Land Ordinance of 1785, which created the Public Land Survey System, the Treasury Department had already overseen the survey of the "Northwest Territory", including what is now the state of Ohio. Montana's 1st congressional district is a congressional district in the United States House of Representatives that was apportioned after the 2020 United States census. The first candidates ran in the 2022 elections for a seat in the 118th United States Congress. History From 1913 to 1993, Montana had two congressional seats. From 1913 to 1919, those seats were elected statewide at-large on a general ticket. After 1919, however, the state was divided into geographical districts, with the 1st district covering the western part of the state, including Missoula, Great Falls, Butte, and Helena. Montana's At-large Congressional District
Montana is represented in the United States House of Representatives by one at-large congressional district, among the 435 in the United States Congress. The district was the most populous U.S. congressional district, with just over 1 million constituents. It was also the second-largest by land area, after Alaska's at-large congressional district, and the largest by land area in the contiguous United States. Currently, the district is represented by Republican Matt Rosendale. It had previously been represented by Republican Greg Gianforte, who did not seek re-election in 2020. Instead, he opted to run for Governor of Montana. Starting in the 2022 midterm elections, per the 2020 United States census, Montana regained the congressional seat it lost after the 1990 census.
