John M. Baillie
John McKay Baillie (December 10, 1847 – May 4, 1913) was a farmer, school teacher and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Pictou County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1906 to 1911 as a Liberal-Conservative member. He was born in Earltown, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, the son of Kenneth Baillie and Maria McKay, and was educated at the Pictou Academy. He taught school for 21 years. Baillie married Mary Jane McKay. He served as superintendent for the Pictou County Municipal Home from around 1882 to 1907. Baillie was leader of the Opposition in the provincial assembly from 1910 to 1911. Earltown, Nova Scotia ''(Baile-an-Iarla)'' is a Canadian rural community in Colchester County, Nova Scotia. The community is located 25 km north of the town of Truro on Route 311, on the north slope of the Cobequid Mountains. History Earltown was included within the Philadelphia grant of 1765. European settlement commenced in 1813 as an extension of the Highland Scot settlements in Western Pictou County. The two earliest settlers were Angus Sutherland and Donald MacIntosh, natives of Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland, who had previously settled in Pictou County. In the following years they were joined by approximately 100 families who immigrated directly from the Sutherland, Ross and Caithness, Scotland. Pictou Academy
Pictou Academy (PA), founded in 1815 by Dr. Thomas McCulloch, is a secondary school in Pictou, Nova Scotia. Prior to the twentieth century, it was a grammar school; a liberal, nonsectarian degree-granting college; and then a secondary school. Pictou Academy's current principal is Starr Pettipas. The Pictou Academy Educational Foundation provides additional funds to the school. The original site of the academy was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1937, as it symbolized the introduction of nonsectarian education to The Maritimes in the early 19th century. In 2017 the CCRSB elected a board of supervisors to survey the three schools in the town of Pictou. New Glasgow is a town in Pictou County, in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It is situated on the banks of the East River of Pictou, which flows into Pictou Harbour, a sub-basin of the Northumberland Strait. The town's population was 9,075 in the 2016 census. New Glasgow is at the centre of the province's fourth largest urban area; the population of the New Glasgow census agglomeration in the 2016 census was 34,487.
