John Lyon (botanist)
John Lyon (1765–14 September, 1814) was an 18th/19th century Scottish botanist and plant collector in the USA who died during his explorations. Life He was born in or near Dundee where his family appear to have been involved in the blossoming jute industry there in the late 18th century. Multiple sources give his birthplace as "Gillogie" but, outwith reference to Lyon, there is no record of this place name anywhere in Scotland, so it appears to have been wrongly transcribed at some point. In 1783 he appears as John Lyon junior, living with his father, John Lyon, a merchant on the Murraygate in east Dundee. He appears to have trained as a nurseryman and gardener, probably on a large country estate near Dundee. He was certainly living in Pennsylvania by 1796 when he joined William Hamilton at Woodlands near Philadelphia as Director of planting. From 1799 he began plant-collecting in the Allegheny Mountains. John Lyon (school Founder)
John Lyon (1514–1592) was a significant English landowner, who by 1564 had the largest land-rental income in Harrow, and who was subsequently the founder of Harrow School, and of The John Lyon School, and of the John Lyon's Charity. The Harrow School house, Lyon's, is named after him. He was a member of the Anglo-Norman Lyons family, and was a first cousin of Sir John Lyon, who was Lord Mayor of London for 1554 to 1555. Life John Lyon, who was born in 1514, and resided at Preston Hall, was a member of the Anglo-Norman Lyons family that owned estates at Harrow-on-the-Hill. He was the son of John Lyon (b. c.1450), and the first cousin of Sir John Lyon, who was Lord Mayor of London in 1553–1554, who was a member of the Worshipful Company of Grocers. Jack Lyon
William John Lyon (15 February 1898 – 26 May 1941) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. He was killed in World War II while serving with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Early life and career Lyon was born in London, England, and educated at a Brighton Grammar School. He won a scholarship to the University of Oxford, but did not take it up as he enlisted in the British Army aged 17. During World War I, while serving on the western front, he was twice mentioned in dispatches and his health was damaged by mustard gas. He was promoted to a non-commissioned officer and later was an officer in the Royal Sussex Regiment and military intelligence. After leaving the military he worked as a linguist and cypher translator at the Foreign Office. Local politics Lyon was active in the UK Labour Party. John J. Lyon (4 March 1803, Glasgow – 28 November 1889) was a Scottish Latter Day Saint poet and hymn writer. Biography Early Years John J. Lyon was born to Thomas Lyon and Janet McArthur, a poor and illiterate family in the slums of Glasgow. He was the only child of Thomas and Janet's four children to live to adulthood. Thomas' sister Margaret, who had lost all of her children, adopted five-year-old John in order to alleviate some of her brother's monetary expenses. After less than a year, young Lyon returned to Glasgow after the passing of Margaret's wealthy husband. A year or so later, his father died. At age eight, Lyon began attending school and did so for only a year and a half. That was the extent of his formal childhood schooling. John Lyon, 4th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (16631712) was a Scottish nobleman and peer. He was the son of Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. He married Elizabeth Stanhope on 21 September 1691 and was succeeded as Earl by his son John Lyon, 5th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Marriage and issue On 21 September 1691, John married Elizabeth Stanhope, daughter of Lady Elizabeth Butler and possibly Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl of Chesterfield. John Lyon, 8th Lord Glamis (died 1578) was a Scottish nobleman, judge and Lord High Chancellor of Scotland. Life He was the eldest son of John Lyon, 7th Lord Glamis, by his wife, Janet Keith, daughter of Robert Keith, Master of Marischal, and sister of William Keith, 4th Earl Marischal. He succeeded as Lord Glamis on the death of his father in 1558. His name first appears in the list of members of the privy council at a meeting of 22 December 1561. On 10 September 1563 the island of Inchkeith was committed to his charge. John Patrick Lyon MBE (born 9 March 1962) is a retired boxer from Great Britain. Boxing career A member of the Greenall St. Helens Amateur Boxing Club he competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics and 1988 Summer Olympics. He represented England and won a silver medal in the light flyweight division, at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Four years later he represented England again and won a gold medal in the men's flyweight division (– 48 kg), at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. He appeared at a third consecutive games in 1990. Lyon won eight English ABA titles, four flyweight and four light-flyweight and a bronze medal in the 1991 Acropolis Cup, retiring immediately afterwards.
