The House of Assembly was the legislature of the British colony of Jamaica. It held its first meeting on 20 January 1664 at Spanish Town. Cundall, Frank. (1915''Historic Jamaica''.London: Institute of Jamaica. p. 15. As a result of the Morant Bay Rebellion, the Assembly voted to abolish self-governance in 1865. Jamaica then became a direct-ruled crown colony. Originally there were twelve districts represented. For many years, a high property qualification ensured that the House of Assembly was dominated by the White Jamaican planter class. However, to elect these representatives, the bar was lower for "freeholders", who just had to be white men with a house, pen or plantation, and owned black slaves.Christer Petley, ''White Fury'' (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2018), p. 42. James Hakewill
James Hakewill (1778–1843) was an English architect, best known for his illustrated publications. Life The second son of John Hakewill, he was brought up as an architect, and exhibited some designs at the Royal Academy. He was collecting materials for a work on the Rhine when he died in London, 28 May 1843. Works In 1813 he published a series of ''Views of the Neighbourhood of Windsor, &c., with engravings by others from his own drawings''. In 1816–17 he travelled in Italy, and on his return published in parts ''A Picturesque Tour of Italy'', in which some of his own drawings were finished into pictures for engraving by J. M. W. Turner. In 1820–1 he visited Jamaica, and subsequently published ''A Picturesque Tour in the Island of Jamaica, from his own drawings'' In 1828 he published ''Plans, Sections, and Elevations of the Abattoirs in Paris, with considerations for their adoption in London''. Planters Nut & Chocolate Company is an American snack food company now owned by Hormel Foods. Planters is best known for its processed nuts and for the Mr. Peanut icon that symbolizes them. Mr. Peanut was created by grade schooler Antonio Gentile for a 1916 contest to design the company's brand icon. The design was modified by a commercial artist and has continued to change over the years. History Planters was founded by Italian immigrant Amedeo Obici in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He started his career as a bellhop and fruit stand vendor in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Obici later moved to Wilkes-Barre, opened his own fruit stand, and invested in a peanut roaster. Obici turned peddler within a few years, using a horse and wagon, and calling himself "The Peanut Specialist". In 1906, Obici entered a partnership with Mario Peruzzi, the soon to be owner of Planters.
