John Love (footballer)
John Thomson Love DFC (18 March 1924 – 14 June 2007) was a Scottish football player and manager. He scored 47 goals in 146 league games in the Scottish and English leagues, playing for Leith Athletic, Albion Rovers, Nottingham Forest, and Walsall. He later managed Llanelli, Walsall, and Wrexham. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service during World War II. Football career Love, "a hard inside forward with a strong shot", won a Distinguished Flying Cross after being wounded by shrapnel whilst serving in the Royal Air Force in 1944. He started his career at Leith Athletic, and scored five goals in nineteen games during the 1947–48 Second Division, after which Leigh were relegated. He moved on to Albion Rovers of the First Division, and scored eleven goals in 28 league games in 1948–49. Scottish Football League First Division
The Scottish Football League First Division was the second tier in the Scottish football league system between 1975 and 2013. History The First Division was introduced in 1975–76 to replace the old Scottish Football League Division Two, as the top flight of the Scottish Football League was renamed from Division One to Premier Division. In 1998, the Premier Division clubs broke away from the Scottish Football League to form the Scottish Premier League. The First Division remained the second tier of the Scottish league system, but was now the top tier of the Scottish Football League. Welsh Cup
The FAW Welsh Cup ( cy, Cwpan Cymdeithas Pêl-droed Cymru), currently known as the JD Welsh Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a knock-out football competition contested annually by teams in the Welsh football league system. It is considered the most prestigious of the cup competitions in domestic Welsh association football. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is the organising body of this competition, which has been run (except during the two World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic) every year since its inception in 1877–78. 1957–58 Football League
The 1957–58 season was the 59th completed season of The Football League. The first division title went to Wolverhampton Wanderers for the second time, while Sunderland were relegated to the second division for the first time in the club's history, after 57 consecutive seasons in the top flight of English football. The season was marred by the Munich air disaster, in which eight Manchester United players died as a result of the crash with two others suffering career-ending injuries. Manchester United were chasing a hat-trick of league championships, but they dropped 21 points in 14 matches after the Munich crash and finished 21 points behind the champions Wolves. Frank Buckley (footballer)
Franklin Charles Buckley (more commonly known as Major Frank Buckley) (3 October 1882 – 21 December 1964) was an English football player and, later, manager. He was the brother of Chris Buckley, who played for Aston Villa. Early life Buckley was born in Urmston, Lancashire. He attended St Francis Xavier's College, Liverpool, and became an office clerk. Already part of the Manchester Regiment, Buckley signed up for a 12-year enlistment in King's Regiment (Liverpool) and expected to serve in the Boer War, but was instead sent to Ireland. He bought himself out of the army in 1902 to become a professional footballer. Playing career He went from Aston Villa to Brighton and Hove Albion to Manchester United and Manchester City all within six years, and found something approaching stability only with Birmingham, where he made 56 appearances. Football League Third Division South
The Third Division South of The Football League was a tier in the English football league system from 1921 to 1958. It ran in parallel with the Third Division North with clubs elected to the League or relegated from Division Two allocated to one or the other according to geographical position. Some clubs in the English Midlands shuttled between the Third Division South and the Third Division North according to the composition of the two leagues in any one season. This division was created in 1921 from the Third Division, formed one year earlier when the Football League absorbed the leading clubs from the Southern League. In 1921, a Northern section was also created called the Third Division North.
