John Leak Monument
The John Leak Monument is located off Huish Drive, in Victoria Park, Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. Unveiled on 20 April 2012, the monument represents the contribution made by John Leak VC, the first Queenslander to be awarded a Victoria Cross. John Leak John Leak VC was born 1892 in Portsmouth, England. After emigrating to Australia he enlisted into the 9th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, on 28 January 1915 in Rockhampton, Queensland. On 16 April 1915 he embarked from Brisbane, Queensland to serve in Gallipoli. The Victoria Cross was awarded for bravery and heroism displayed on 23 July 1916, during the Battle of Pozières, France. Monument Dedicated to Private John Leak, the first Queenslander to be awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. The memorial is unique in that it is a mosaic sculpture made by Rockhampton artist Liz Hills supported by Adrienne Wall and Melinda Clayton. The monu ... John Leak
John Leak, VC (20 October 1972) was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in battle that could be awarded at that time to a member of the Australian armed forces. Leak enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in early 1915, and served with the 9th Battalion in the Gallipoli Campaign during the First World War. Evacuated suffering from dysentery, Leak rejoined his battalion after it had been withdrawn to Egypt. Along with his unit, he transferred to the Western Front in France and Belgium, where he participated in the Battle of Pozières in July 1916. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the battle. The following month he was seriously wounded in the Battle of Mouquet Farm. Leak was evacuated to the United Kingdom, and did not return to his unit until October 1917. Victoria Cross
The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious award of the British honours system. It is awarded for valour "in the presence of the enemy" to members of the British Armed Forces and may be awarded posthumously. It was previously awarded by countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, most of which have established their own honours systems and no longer recommend British honours. It may be awarded to a person of any military rank in any service and to civilians under military command. No civilian has received the award since 1879. Since the first awards were presented by Queen Victoria in 1857, two-thirds of all awards have been personally presented by the British monarch. Battle Of Pozières
The Battle of Pozières (23 July – 3 September 1916) took place in northern France around the village of Pozières, during the Battle of the Somme. The costly fighting ended with the British in possession of the plateau north and east of the village, in a position to menace the German bastion of Thiepval from the rear. The Australian official historian Charles Bean wrote that Pozières ridge "is more densely sown with Australian sacrifice than any other place on earth". Prelude The village of Pozières, on the Albert–Bapaume road, lies atop a ridge approximately in the centre of what was the British sector of the Somme battlefield.
