John Laval
John Laval (September 21, 1854 – June 4, 1937) was an American bishop of the Catholic Church. He served as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans from 1911 to 1937. Biography Born in Saint-Étienne, Loire, France, Laval was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of New Orleans on November 10, 1877. On September 7, 1911 Pope Pius X appointed him as the Titular Bishop of ''Hierocaesarea'' and Auxiliary Bishop of New Orleans. He was consecrated a bishop by Archbishop James Blenk, S.M. on November 29, 1911. The principal co-consecrators were Bishops Cornelius Van de Ven of Alexandria in Louisiana and John Shaw of San Antonio. He continued to serve as an auxiliary bishop until his death on June 4, 1937, at the age of 82. Cornelius Van De Ven
Cornelius Van de Ven (June 16, 1865 – May 8, 1932) was a Dutch-born American prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as the fourth Bishop of Alexandria in Louisiana from 1910 until his death in 1932. He previously served as bishop of the Diocese of Natchitoches in Louisiana from 1904 until its dissolution in 1910. Biography Early life Cornelius Van de Ven was born on June 16, 1865 in Oirschot, in the southern Netherlands, to Peter Van de Ven and Joanna Maria Roche. After receiving his early education in Sint-Michielsgestel, he began his studies for the priesthood and attended the diocesan seminary in Haaren. While still a seminarian, Van de Ven accepted an appeal from Archbishop Francis Janssens of New Orleans for missionaries in the United States. His uncle, Rev. Cornelius J. John William Shaw (December 12, 1863 – November 2, 1934) was an American clergyman of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Antonio, Bishop of San Antonio (1911–1918) and Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans, Archbishop of New Orleans (1918–1934). Biography One of six children, Shaw was born in Mobile, Alabama to Patrick and Elizabeth (née Smith) Shaw.
