John Laird (American Politician)
John Laird (born March 29, 1950), an American politician, is the California State Senator for District 17, since 7 December 2020, and was Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency from 2011-2019 and a former legislator who represented the 27th district in the California State Assembly until 2008. The 27th district included parts of Santa Clara County, Santa Cruz County and Monterey County. Laird (along with Mark Leno) was one of the first two openly gay men to serve in the California legislature. Laird became one of the United States' first openly gay mayors in 1983 when he took over the mayoralty of the city of Santa Cruz, California. John Laird (philosopher)
John Laird (17 May 1887 – 5 August 1946) was a philosopher, in the school of New British Realism, who later turned to metaphysical idealism. Life Laird was born at Durris, Kincardineshire, a parish adjacent to the birthplace of Scottish philosopher Thomas Reid. He was the son of Margaret Laird (née Steward) and D. M. W. Laird, a Church of Scotland minister, and the son of John Laird, a minister and Free Church moderator. He attended Aberdeen Grammar School and the University of Edinburgh, where in 1908 he graduated with a first class MA in philosophy. He spent a brief time at Heidelberg before entering Trinity College, Cambridge as a Scholar. He graduated from Cambridge with a first class BA in both parts of the Moral sciences tripos, and graduated with an MA in 1920. He was an Assistant Lecturer at the University of St Andrews in 1911. John Laird (shipbuilder)
John Laird (14 June 1805 – 29 October 1874) was a British shipbuilder and key figure in the development of the town of Birkenhead. He was the elder brother of Macgregor Laird. He was one of the first to use iron in the construction of ships. Early years Born in Greenock, Scotland, the eldest son of Scottish entrepreneur William Laird and Agnes (née Macgregor), John Laird was raised in Liverpool and educated at that city's Royal Institution. In 1824 the Laird family moved to Birkenhead, on the opposite bank of the River Mersey, where William Laird and Daniel Horton established the Birkenhead Iron Works. John Dunn Laird, Baron Laird, , of Artigarvan (23 April 1944 – 10 July 2018) was a Northern Irish politician, life peer and former chairman of the cross-border Ulster-Scots Agency. In 2013 Laird allegedly offered to lobby for a firm against parliamentary rules. Consequently, he resigned from the Ulster Unionist Party. Career Whilst Chairman of the Ulster Young Unionist Council in 1970, Laird became the youngest member of the Parliament of Northern Ireland, after winning the seat of Belfast Saint Anne's in a by-election caused by the death of his father, Dr Norman Laird OBE. John Houston Laird (September 18, 1874 – 1959) was a railway conductor and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Moose Jaw City from 1934 to 1938 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. John Laird (1811–1896) was a Scottish minister of the Free Church of Scotland (1843–1900), Free Church of Scotland who served as Moderator of the General Assembly to the Free Church 1889/90. Life He was born in the manse at Portmoak on the banks of Loch Leven (Kinross), Loch Leven, the son of Hugh Laird (d.1849). His father was minister of the parish from 1802 to 1843 and the Free Chuch minister until his death in 1849. He studied divinity at the University of Edinburgh and was ordained by the Church of Scotland at Arbroath in 1835. He was translated to Inverkeilor in 1836. He left the established church in the Disruption of 1843 and joined the Free Church of Scotland. In 1847 he became minister of the Free St George's Church in Montrose. In 1853 he translated to the Free Church in Cupar, replacing Adam Cairns. In 1870 he organised the rebuilding of the Free Church in Cupar.
