John L. Weimer
John Louis Weimer III (born October 2, 1954) is an American judge who has served as the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana since 2021. Weimer received a Juris Doctor The Juris Doctor (J.D. or JD), also known as Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D., JD, D.Jur., or DJur), is a graduate-entry professional degree in law and one of several Doctor of Law degrees. The J.D. is the standard degree obtained to practice law ... from Louisiana State University in 1980. In 1995, he was elected District Judge for the 17th Judicial District Court. In 1998 he was elected as an Appellate Judge for the Louisiana Court of Appeal, First Circuit. He served in that capacity until he took his seat as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 2001. The Supreme Court of Louisiana (french: Cour suprême de Louisiane) is the highest court and court of last resort in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The modern Supreme Court, composed of seven justices, meets in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Bernette Joshua Johnson (born June 17, 1943) is a Democratic lawyer from New Orleans, Louisiana, who served as the chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court from 2013 to 2020. She is the first African American to serve in this position, and succeeded Catherine D. Kimball. Early life and education Johnson was born in 1943 in Donaldsonville, Louisiana.
