John L. Beckwith
John Leander Beckwith (March 5, 1856 – June 3, 1934) was an entrepreneur and politician in British Columbia, Canada. He served as mayor of Victoria in 1912. He was born in Cornwallis Township, Nova Scotia (near modern-day Kentville), the third son of John Albert Beckwith and Rebecca Ann Barnaby, and was educated there. His grandfather, Mayhew Beckwith (), was a Member of Provincial Parliament representing Kings County. The Beckwith family was an established one in the area, having been part of the original group of New England Planters who were land grantees in Cornwallis back in 1760. John Leander Beckwith began work as a retail clerk at the age of sixteen and came to British Columbia in 1884 to join his elder brother William Sibley Beckwith. Victoria College was an affiliated college based in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1903, it was the first post-secondary institution established in British Columbia, and served as the predecessor to the University of Victoria. As a result, the history and traditions of the institution are perpetuated by the University of Victoria. It was established in 1903 as an affiliated college of McGill University based at Victoria High School. Victoria College suspended operations when the University of British Columbia (UBC) opened to the public in 1915. Victoria College resumed operations in 1921 at Craigdarroch Castle, as an affiliate of UBC. An influx in enrolment following the Second World War led the institution to move to a new location in the Uplands neighbourhood of Victoria. Saanich, British Columbia
Saanich ( ) is a district municipality on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, within the Greater Victoria area. The population was 117,735 at the 2021 census, making it the most populous municipality in the Capital Regional District and Vancouver Island, and the eighth-most populous in the province. The district adopted its name after the Saanich First Nation, meaning "emerging land" or "emerging people". John Beckwith (composer)
John Beckwith (March 9, 1927 – December 5, 2022) was a Canadian composer, writer, pianist, teacher, and administrator. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, he studied piano with Alberto Guerrero at the Toronto Conservatory of Music in 1945. He received a Mus.B. in 1947 and a Mus.M. in 1961 from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music. From 1950 to 1951, he studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He started teaching in the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto in 1952. From 1970 to 1977, he was the dean of the faculty. He was founding director of the Institute for Canadian Music at the University of Toronto. He retired in 1990. Beckwith wrote over 160 compositions covering stage, orchestral, chamber, solo and choral genres. In addition, he wrote 17 books, the most recent of which was published 3 months before his death.
