John Koenig (diplomat)
John M. Koenig (born September 24, 1958) is an American diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Cyprus from 2012 to 2015. Early life and education Koenig was born in Tacoma, Washington. As a teenager, he visited Pakistan with a family friend and was later an exchange student. He earned a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Washington and a master's degree in foreign relations from Johns Hopkins University. Career A career foreign service officer, he has held assignments in Belgium, Greece, Indonesia, Italy and the Philippines. He served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. embassy in Berlin. This is a list of ambassadors of the United States to Cyprus. Until 1960 Cyprus had been a colony of the British Empire. On August 16, 1960, Cyprus gained its independence from the United Kingdom. The United States diplomatic recognition, recognized the new nation and established an embassy in Nicosia on August 16, 1960, with L. Douglas Heck as ''Chargé d'Affaires ad interim''. Diplomatic relations between the United States and Cyprus have been continuous since that time. One ambassador, Rodger P. Davies, was assassinated by a sniper while at his post in 1974. The United States does not recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, proclaimed November 15, 1983, by Turkey. The U.S. Embassy in Cyprus is located in Nicosia. Demetris Christofias
Demetris Christofias, also spelled Dimitris Christofias ( el, Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας ; 29 August 1946 – 21 June 2019), was a Cypriot politician who served as the sixth president of Cyprus from 2008 to 2013. Christofias was the General Secretary of AKEL (Progressive Party of Working People) and was the European Union's and Cyprus' first — and so far only — communist head of state. He won the 2008 Cypriot presidential elections in the second round of voting. Throughout the election campaign, he pledged to restart talks with Turkish Cypriots in order to find a solution to the Cyprus dispute and reunify the island. He also supported the closure of the British military bases on Cyprus.
