John Ker (minister)
John Ker (1819–1886) was a Scottish ecclesiastical writer and minister in the United Presbyterian Church. Biography Ker was born in Tweedmuir 1819. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh, he then spent some time in Germany in post-graduate work. He became pastor of East Campbell Church, Glasgow, in 1851; and in 1876 was appointed professor of practical training in the United Presbyterian Theological Hall. He died in 1886. United Presbyterian Church (Scotland)
The United Presbyterian Church (1847–1900) was a Scottish Presbyterian denomination. It was formed in 1847 by the union of the United Secession Church and the Relief Church, and in 1900 merged with the Free Church of Scotland to form the United Free Church of Scotland, which in turn united with the Church of Scotland in 1929. For most of its existence the United Presbyterian Church was the third largest Presbyterian Church in Scotland, and stood on the liberal wing of Scots Presbyterianism. The Church's name was often abbreviated to the initials U.P. United Secession Church It was founded in 1820 by a union of various churches which had seceded from the established Church of Scotland. The First Secession had been in 1732, and the resultant "Associate Presbytery" grew to include 45 congregations. Charles McBride
Charles McBride (sometimes known as Charles McBryde; 1853 – 17 December 1903) was a Scottish sculptor active in the second half of the 19th century. Life McBride was born in Edinburgh in June 1853. He lived at 8 Hope Street just off Charlotte Square, facing his stone-yard at 7 Hope Street Lane (now built over). He died in December 1903. He is buried in the northern extension of Dean Cemetery in western Edinburgh. His grave is on the south side of the north path, towards the centre of the path, in the second row back. It holds a fine bronze head depicting McBride, carved by Henry Snell Gamley.
