John Kaye (screenwriter)
John Kaye (born August 31, 1941) is an American screenwriter, novelist and playwright. His feature credits as a screenwriter include ''American Hot Wax'', ''Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins'' and ''Where the Buffalo Roam''. He also directed the feature film '' Forever Lulu'', starring Melanie Griffith and Patrick Swayze. His novels Stars Screaming (1997) and The Dead Circus (2002) were published by the Atlantic Monthly/Grove Press. A graduate of U.C. Berkeley, Kaye was producer and writer of The Lohman and Barkley Show, a late-nite live, 90 minute, satirical show that ran for a year on KNBC, the NBC affiliate in Los Angeles in 1971. A precursor to Saturday Night Live, Kaye gave Barry Levinson, Craig T. Nelson, John Amos, and McLean Stevenson their first jobs in the entertainment business. ''American Hot Wax'' is a 1978 biographical film directed by Floyd Mutrux with a screenplay by John Kaye from a story by John Kaye and Art Linson. The film tells the story of pioneering disc jockey Alan Freed, who in the 1950s helped introduce and popularize rock and roll, and is often credited with coining the term "rock 'n' roll". The film starred Tim McIntire, Fran Drescher, Jay Leno, Laraine Newman, Jeff Altman, and Moosie Drier. It also featured musical performances by Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie Ford, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Brooklyn Dreams as "Professor La Plano and The Planotones". The film was not a box-office success. A&M Records released a two-record soundtrack album featuring the film's live Brooklyn Paramount performances on record one (in stereo) and the film's soundtrack (the original monophonic hit recordings) on record two. ''Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins'' is a 1975 American comedy-drama film directed by Dick Richards and written by John Kaye. The film was the second film credit for Jerry Bruckheimer, who was an associate producer. The film features the song "Honky Tonk Angels", performed by lead actress Sally Kellerman. Plot Idiotic, alcoholic driving instructor and former Marine Corps sergeant Rafferty (Alan Arkin) lives in poverty near Hollywood, California. ''Where the Buffalo Roam'' is a 1980 American semi-biographical comedy film which loosely depicts author Hunter S. Thompson's rise to fame in the 1970s and his relationship with Chicano attorney and activist Oscar "Zeta" Acosta. The film was produced and directed by Art Linson. Bill Murray portrayed the author and Peter Boyle portrayed Acosta, who is referred to in the film as Carl Lazlo, Esq. A number of other names, places, and details of Thompson's life are also changed.
