John Jordan (basketball)
John Jordan (1910-1991) was an American basketball player and coach, best known for coaching the University of Notre Dame's men's basketball team from 1951 to 1964. Jordan played basketball at Notre Dame in the 1930s and was a teammate of George Ireland, Moose Krause, and Ray Meyer. He was the captain of the Fighting Irish in 1935. After college, he took a coaching job at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, and remained there until 1949. He spent the 1950–51 basketball season as coach at Loyola University Chicago, then took the reins at Notre Dame the following season. While at Notre Dame, Jordan recorded a 199-131 record and guided his players to five appearances in the NCAA tournament. He attended Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago, graduating in 1929. After Jordan's coaching career ended, he worked with the Chicago Park District. Johnny Jordan
John William Jordan (8 November 1921 – 9 January 2016) is an English former professional footballer who played as an inside forward. Born in Bromley, Kent, he began his career with home-town club Bromley, before moving on to Grays Athletic, West Ham United (as an amateur), and then Tottenham Hotspur. He scored twice on his 'Lilywhites' debut in a 5-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at White Hart Lane in August 1947 in the old Second Division. That season he scored 10 goals in 24 appearances. He moved to Italy and Juventus in 1948, and subsequently appeared for Birmingham City, Sheffield Wednesday, Tonbridge and Bedford Town. Sir John Newell Jordan (5 September 1852 – 14 September 1925) was a British diplomat. Early life and career Jordan was born in Balloo, County Down, Ireland, the son of John Jordan, a wealthy Presbyterian farmer, and his wife Mary (née Newell). He apparently never lost his Ulster accent. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, Queen's College, Belfast and Queen's College, Cork. In 1876 he joined the Chinese Consular Service as a student interpreter. He held various posts in South China before being appointed Chinese Secretary at the British Legation in Peking in 1891. In 1896 he was appointed Consul-General at Seoul, Korea, becoming ''Chargé d'affaires'' in 1898 and Minister-Resident in August 1901. He remained there until November 1905, being appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in 1904. John Jordan is an Irish judge who has served as a Judge of the High Court since February 2019. He was previously practiced as a barrister. Early life Jordan is from Castlebar, County Mayo, where he attended secondary school at St Gerald's College. He studied law at University College Dublin and at the King's Inns. Legal career He was called to the Bar in 1985 and became a senior counsel in 2011. His practice encompassed criminal law and private law, including in the areas of contract law, tort law, and property law. In criminal trials, he acted for both the defence and on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions in matters involving sexual offences, road traffic offences, fraud, and homicide. John Jordan (1930–1988) was an Irish poet and short-story writer. Life and work Born in the Rotunda Maternity Hospital, Dublin on 8 April 1930, Jordan was educated at Synge Street CBS, University College, Dublin (U.C.D.) and Pembroke College, Oxford. In his teens he acted on the stage of the Gate Theatre, Dublin, before winning a Scholarship in English and French to Oxford University from U.C.D. In the mid-1950s he returned to U.C.D. as a lecturer in English and taught there until the end of the 1960s. He also lectured on sabbatical leave at the Memorial University in Newfoundland and briefly at Princeton University in the US Founding member of Aosdána. He was a celebrated literary critic from the late 1950s until his death in June 1988 in Cardiff, Wales, where he had been participating in the Merriman Summer School.
