John Joe O'Reilly (Gaelic Footballer)
John Joe O'Reilly (1918 – 1952) was a legendary Gaelic footballer who played for the Cavan county team. He is the only man to lead a team to All Ireland glory outside of Ireland, having captained the Breffni men to victory against Kerry in the iconic 1947 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final played at the Polo Grounds in New York City. Playing career Born at the Derries Upper, Killeshandra, County Cavan, his father was Big John O'Reilly who played as goalkeeper on the Cavan county team and his mother was Sarah Anne. After early successes with St Patrick's College, Cavan and his club, Cornafean, he captained the Cavan county team, which won All-Ireland Senior Football Championships in 1947 (at the New York City Polo Grounds) and 1948, having also played on three losing sides in the final. Killeshandra
Killeshandra or Killashandra (), is a village in County Cavan, Ireland. It is northwest of Cavan Town in the centre of County Cavan's lakeland and geopark region and the Erne catchment environment of rivers, lakes, wetlands and woodland. Together with the Lough Oughter Special Protected Area (SPA), it has been recognised by the EU programme for wildlife Natura 2000 since 2010. Killeshandra is noted by Fáilte Ireland as an "Angling Centre of Excellence", and as a hub for the Cavan Walking Festival which takes place in May each year. Meath County Football Team
The Meath county football team represents Meath in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Meath GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Brian Smyth (Gaelic Footballer)
Brian Smyth (24 March 1924 – 16 March 2016) was an Irish Gaelic footballer and Hurling, hurler who played as a centre-forward at senior level for the Meath county football team. Born in Batterstown, County Meath, Smyth had his first involvement with Gaelic football and hurling against Boy Scouts from Dublin, who used to come to the local area on weekend camps. He fielded with local club Batterstown GAA, Batterstown in both codes but when the club was unable to muster enough players, he lined out with Flathouse GAA, Flathouse with whom he won a junior championship medal in hurling. He also played both codes with Ratoath GAA, Ratoath before lining out with Oberstown GAA, Oberstown in hurling and Skryne GFC, Skryne in Gaelic football, helping the latter to five Meath Senior Football Championship, championship victories. MacRory Cup
The MacRory Cup is an inter-college (school) Gaelic football tournament in Ulster at senior "A" grade. The MacLarnon Cup is the competition for schools at senior 'B' grade. Players must be under nineteen at the start of the tournament. The winners advance to the semi-finals of the Hogan Cup, the All-Ireland colleges "A" senior football championship. The competition and trophy are named after Joseph MacRory, then Bishop of Down and Connor, who donated the first cup in 1923. The current champions are St Mary's Grammar School, Magherafelt, who beat first-time finalists Holy Trinity College, Cookstown in the 2022 final. The final is held every year on (or close to) Saint Patrick's Day and is televised live on BBC Northern Ireland along with the Ulster Rugby Schools Cup final. Railway Cup
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). Ulster Senior Football Championship
The Ulster Senior Football Championship is an inter-county competition for Gaelic football teams in the province of Ulster. It is organised by the Ulster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and begins in early May. The final is usually played on the third Sunday in July. All nine Ulster counties participate. It is regarded as hardest to win of the four provincial football championships. At a referee conference in January 2015, David Coldrick said about officiating in the competition: "Ulster makes or breaks you. It can be a graveyard. The games are different. The Kildare Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition organised since 1888 by Kildare GAA among the top hurling clubs in County Kildare, Ireland.
