John Irwin (academic)
John Thomas Irwin (April 24, 1940 – December 20, 2019) was an American poet and literary critic. He was the Decker Professor in the Humanities and Professor in The Writing Seminars and the English Department at Johns Hopkins University. Background Irwin was born in Houston, Texas, and received his bachelor's degree in English at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. Following a stint in the US Navy, he received his Master's degree and PhD in English from Rice University. He began his teaching career as an assistant professor in the English department at Johns Hopkins University in 1970, but left Johns Hopkins in 1974 to become the editor of ''The Georgia Review'' at the University of Georgia. Dr. Irwin returned to Johns Hopkins to become professor and chair of The Writing Seminars department. John Irwin (admiral)
Rear Admiral John Irwin (15 April 1832 – 28 July 1901) was an officer in the United States Navy. He participated in the African Slave Trade Patrol, fought in the American Civil War, and served as commander of the Asiatic and Pacific Squadrons. Naval career Irwin was born in PittsburghMcDowell, p. 476. or Lancaster (sources vary), Pennsylvania, on 15 April 1832. He was the son of United States Congressman William W. John Irwin (British Army Officer)
General Sir John Irwin KB (1727/28 – May 1788) was an Irish soldier who served in the British Army. Career Educated in Ireland, Irwin was commissioned into the 5th Regiment of Foot in 1736. He served in an attack on the French coast in 1758 and then fought under Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick in Germany in 1760. He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for East Grinstead from 1762 to 1783, Governor of Gibraltar from 1765 to 1767, member of the Irish privy council, and as Commander-in-Chief, Ireland from 1775 to 1782. Losing the last of these posts on the fall of Lord North's administration in March 1782, he moved back into his house in Piccadilly and his place in parliament, rising to full General and retiring from parliament in 1783. ''Badger's Green'' is a 1949 British comedy film directed by John Irwin and starring Barbara Murray, Brian Nissen, Garry Marsh and Kynaston Reeves. It is based on the play '' Badger's Green'' by R.C. John Irwin (politician)
John Irwin Sr. (October 10, 1869 – May 7, 1948) was a Canadian provincial politician from Alberta. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1926 to 1940 sitting with the Conservative caucus in opposition. Early life John Irwin was born October 10, 1869 at Picton, Ontario to Henry (Irish) and Mary Charlton Irwin (English). He was educated in Picton and later moved to Calgary where he married Annetta Brown and together had five children. Irwin was a businessman in Calgary, purchasing the 1903 Calgary Milling Company building on Stephen Avenue in 1912 and turning it into a grocery store specializing in fancy and imported foods.
