John Hughes (footballer, Born 1921)
John Norman Hughes (10 July 1921 – 31 August 2003) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Birmingham City. Born in Tamworth, Staffordshire, Hughes made his name in non-league football during the Second World War. A versatile player, he joined Birmingham City in June 1947, and made his debut on 6 September 1947 in a 2–1 home win against Luton Town in the Second Division. He played twice more that season at outside right, and a further three times at outside left in the 1948–49 First Division season,Matthews, pp. 183–84. but then returned to the non-league game with Tamworth and then with Atherstone Town. In association football, the manager is the person who runs a football club or a national team. The 1948– 49 season was the 50th completed season of The Football League. Luton () is a town and unitary authority with borough status, in Bedfordshire, England. Non-League football describes football leagues played outside the top leagues of a country. Usually, it describes leagues which are not fully professional. The term is primarily used for football in England, where it is specifically used to describe all football played at levels below those of the Premier League (20 clubs) and the three divisions of the English Football League (EFL; 72 clubs). Currently, a non-League team would be any club playing in the National League or below that level.
