John Hippisley (Parliamentarian)
Sir John Hippisley was an English privateer and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1621 and 1653. He supported the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War. Hippisley was the son of William Hippisley (died 1630). He was knighted at Sheriff Hutton Park on 14 April 1617. In 1621, he was elected Member of Parliament for Petersfield. He was re-elected MP for Petersfield in 1624. About this time, he purchased from Sir John Leman the manor of Lesnes and the site of Lesnes Abbey in Bexley which he later sold to Sir Thomas Gainsford, of Crowhurst, Surrey. In 1624 he was appointed Lieutenant of Dover Castle, a post he held until 1629. House Of Commons Of England
The House of Commons of England was the lower house of the Parliament of England (which incorporated Wales) from its development in the 14th century to the union of England and Scotland in 1707, when it was replaced by the House of Commons of Great Britain after the 1707 Act of Union was passed in both the English and Scottish parliaments at the time. In 1801, with the union of Great Britain and Republic of Ireland, Ireland, that house was in turn replaced by the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Origins The Parliament of England developed from the Magnum Concilium that advised the English monarch in medieval times. This royal council, meeting for short periods, included ecclesiastics, noblemen, and representatives of the county, counties (known as "knights of the shire"). William Uvedale
Sir William Uvedale (c. 15811652) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1614 and 1645. He supported the Royalist cause in the Civil War. Career Uvedale was the son of William Uvedale of Wickham and his wife Mary Norton, daughter of Sir Richard Norton. He matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford on 17 March 1598, aged 16. In 1600, he was a student of the Inner Temple. He was knighted on 19 November 1613. In May 1605, he attended the Earl of Hertford's embassy to Brussels. In 1614 he was elected member of parliament for Hampshire. His father died in 1616 and he eventually inherited the estates on the death of his mother before 1626. Francis Allen (MP)
Francis Allen (ca. 1583 – 6 September 1658) was an English financier, politician and regicide who sided with parliament in the civil War against Charles I of England, Charles I. By the mid-1630s he had become a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths where he became an activist against pressure for members to relocate their homes to Goldsmiths' Row, Cheapside. He was suspended and refused subsequent invitations to rejoin. Allen was elected to the Long Parliament for Cockermouth (Constituency), Cockermouth in April 1642 and assisted with the financial administration of the English Civil War. In January 1644 he was part of a hostile demonstration against the Arthur Capell, 1st Earl of Essex, earl of Essex. He later became a presbyterian elder in William Strong (minister), William Strong's church.
