John Heinlen
Heinlenville ( zh, 海因倫鎮; also called the Sixth Street Chinatown and San Jose Chinatown ) was a Chinese-American ethnic enclave in San Jose, California. Established in 1887 and demolished in 1931, it was the last and longest-lasting of San Jose's five Chinatowns. Namesake Heinlenville was nicknamed after John Heinlen, a German-American rancher who leased land to the Chinese community for a settlement in an era when they were prohibited from owning land outright. Heinlen was born in 1815 in Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1817, and lived in Pennsylvania and Bucyrus, Ohio, before moving to California in 1852. He employed many Chinese Americans on his Coyote ranch and leased land to Chinese farmers in Kings and Fresno counties. He also had good business relations with Chinese merchants in San Jose. Hensley Historic District, San Jose
The Hensley Historic District, also known as Northside Residential District, is a U.S. historic district and residential neighborhood in San Jose, California. The neighborhood is northeast of downtown and is roughly bounded by East Julian Street, North 1st Street, North 7th Street, and East Empire Street. With It is listed as a California Historical Landmark since June 21, 1983; and is listed as one of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) since June 21, 1983. History The Hensley Historic District is named after Helen Mary (née Crosby; 1831–1917) and Samuel J. Hensley (c. 1816–1866), they were active during the early formation of the state and in the Bear Flag Revolt. The Hensley name is also used for the street in San Jose, and the downtown "Hensley Block" at Market and Santa Clara Streets. 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
At 05:12 Pacific Standard Time on Wednesday, April 18, 1906, the coast of Northern California was struck by a major earthquake with an estimated moment magnitude of 7.9 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (''Extreme''). High-intensity shaking was felt from Eureka on the North Coast to the Salinas Valley, an agricultural region to the south of the San Francisco Bay Area. Devastating fires soon broke out in San Francisco and lasted for several days. More than 3,000 people died, and over 80% of the city was destroyed. The events are remembered as one of the worst and deadliest earthquakes in the history of the United States.
