John Hannett
John Hannett (born 23 June 1953) was General Secretary of the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW). Early life and career Hannett was born in Liverpool in 1953. He was a Low Pay Commissioner from 2007 to 2018. He is a former member of the TUC Executive Committee and General Council. Hannett represented Usdaw on the NEC of the Labour Party from 1998-2005. He is also a trustee of the People's History Museum in Manchester. Usdaw Hannett was General Secretary of Usdaw from May 2004 until June 2018, being re-elected in September 2008. Prior to this, he was Area Organiser from 1985, National Officer from 1990 and Deputy General Secretary from 1997. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to the economy. Personal life He lives in the east of Liverpool and supports Everton. The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) is a trade union in the United Kingdom, consisting of around 360,000 members. Usdaw members work in a variety of occupations and industries including: shopworkers, factory and warehouse workers, drivers, call centres, clerical workers, milkround and dairy process, butchers and meat packers, catering, laundries, chemical processing, home shopping and pharmaceutical. The retail sector employs around 2.77 million people. Usdaw is campaigning to win a “New Deal for Workers”: A minimum wage that workers can actually live on; secure hours and an end to zero hours contracts; sick pay for everyone, from day one of illness; stronger redundancy rights; fairness, equality and a stronger voice at work. Sunday Trading Act 1994
The Sunday Trading Act 1994 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom governing the right of shops in England and Wales to trade on a Sunday. Buying and selling on Sunday had previously been illegal, with exceptions, under the Shops Act 1950. Background Following the defeat of the Shops Bill 1986, which would have enabled widespread Sunday trading, compromise legislation was introduced in July 1994 in England and Wales, coming into force on 26 August 1994, allowing shops to open, but restricting opening times of larger stores i.e. those over to a maximum of six hours, between 1000-1800 only. Large retail park shops usually open 1100-1700, with supermarkets more usually choosing 1000-1600. In Central London, for example on Oxford Street, many shops choose to open from 1200-1800. The Licensing Act 2003 (c 17) is an act passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The act establishes a single integrated scheme for licensing premises in England and Wales used to sell or supply of alcohol, provide regulated entertainment, or provide late night refreshment. It allows some or all of these licensable activities to be contained in a single licence—the premises licence—that replaced other schemes. Responsibility for issuing licences is given to local authorities, specifically London boroughs, metropolitan boroughs, unitary authorities, and district councils, who took over this power from the Justices of the Peace under a system of Licensing Committees. James Martin Hannett (31 May 1948 – 18 April 1991), initially credited as Martin Zero, was an English record producer, musician and an original partner/director at Tony Wilson's Factory Records. Hannett produced music by artists including Joy Division, the Durutti Column, Magazine, John Cooper Clarke, New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and Happy Mondays. His distinctive production style embraced atmospheric sounds and electronics. Early life Born in Manchester, England, Hannett was raised in a working class, Catholic family in Miles Platting, Manchester; he attended Corpus Christi school and Xaverian College in Rusholme. The Low Pay Commission (LPC) is an independent body in the United Kingdom, established in 1997, that advises the government on the National Minimum Wage. It is an advisory non-departmental public body of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). History and role The LPC was established in July 1997 on a non-statutory basis before being confirmed in legislation by the National Minimum Wage Act 1998. Each year, the LPC advises the government on what rates the different minimum wages in the UK should be, announcing its recommendation six months before it would come into force. It is then up to the government to accept or reject the LPC's recommendations. In the past, the government has usually accepted the wage levels advocated by the LPC.
