John H. Hoeppel
John Henry Hoeppel (February 10, 1881 – September 21, 1976) was a U.S. Representative from California. He served two terms, from 1933 through 1937, but was expelled from Congress for trying to profit from his appointment of a student to a military service academy. Early life Born near Tell City, Indiana, Hoeppel attended grammar school in Evansville, Indiana but did not attend high school. He enlisted in the United States Army on July 27, 1898, and served successively as private, corporal, and sergeant until 1921, with service in France during the First World War. Hoeppel moved to Arcadia, California in 1919. He was the postmaster of Arcadia from 1923 to 1931. In 1928, he became editor of ''National Defense'' magazine. The 80th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, DC from January 3, 1947, to January 3, 1949, during the third and fourth years of Harry S. Truman's presidency. The apportionment of seats in this House of Representatives was based on the Sixteenth Census of the United States in 1940. The Republicans won the majority in both chambers, marking the first time since the 71st Congress they held full control of Congress, and the first time since the 72nd Congress they held either of the two chambers. California's 12th congressional district is a congressional district in northern California. Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, has represented the district since January 2013. She has represented various congressional districts within the city of San Francisco since 1987. The district was also once represented by Richard Nixon, at a time when the district encompassed Pasadena, Pomona, and Whittier. Currently, the 12th district is located in Alameda County and includes the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, Alameda, Albany, Piedmont, San Leandro and most of San Lorenzo. The 12th district is the most Democratic district in the United States, giving nearly 90% of its vote to Democrats in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.
