John H. Dick
John H. Dick (November 9, 1918 – September 22, 2011) was an American basketball player and Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. College basketball career Dick was born and grew up in The Dalles, Oregon and attended the University of Oregon, where he was a forward on the Ducks basketball team from 1938 to 1940. In 1939, the Ducks won the Northern Division of the Pacific Coast Conference, and then defeated Southern Division champion California to win the conference championship and a berth in the 1939 NCAA basketball championship, the first edition of the tournament. The Ducks defeated Texas and Oklahoma to advance to the championship game against Ohio State. In the championship game, Dick led all scorers with 13 points as the Ducks won 46–33. Following the championship season, Dick was an All-American for the Ducks in 1940. He also received first-team All-PCC honors. The Dalles, Oregon
The Dalles is the largest city of Wasco County, Oregon, United States. The population was 16,010 at the 2020 census, and it is the largest city on the Oregon side of the Columbia River between the Portland Metropolitan Area, and Hermiston. History The site of what is now the city of The Dalles was a major Native American trading center. The general area is one of the continent's most significant archaeological regions. All-America
The All-America designation is an annual honor bestowed upon an amateur sports person from the United States who is considered to be one of the best amateurs in their sport. Individuals receiving this distinction are typically added to an All-America team for their sport. Some sports will have multiple All-America teams and will list the honorees as members of a first team, second team, or third team. As such, All-America teams are composed of outstanding US amateur players. Individuals falling short of qualifying for the honor may receive All-America honorable mention. The designation is typically used at the collegiate level although, beginning in 1957, high school- athletes in football began being honored with All-America status, which then carried-over to other sports like basketball and cross-country running. Oregon Sports Hall Of Fame
The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame honors Oregon athletes, teams, coaches, and others who have made a significant contribution to sports in Oregon.
