John Goldthorpe
John Harry Goldthorpe (born 27 May 1935) is a British sociologist. He is an emeritus Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford. His main research interests are in the fields of social stratification and mobility, and comparative macro-sociology. He also writes on methodological issues in relation to the integration of empirical, quantitative research and theory with a particular focus on issues of causation. Early life Goldthorpe was born in Great Houghton, a remote mining village in the then West Riding of Yorkshire. His father was a colliery clerk and his mother a dressmaker. He was educated at Wath Grammar School, and then took a first class honours degree in history at University College London, being much influenced by the teaching of Alfred Cobban and Gustaaf Renier. Geoff Evans (political Scientist)
Geoffrey Evans, is a British political scientist and academic. He is Professor of the Sociology of Politics at the University of Oxford and an Official Fellow in Politics at Nuffield College, Oxford. He is a political scientist who has also held posts in psychology and sociology. An expert in elections, he is long-standing editor of the journal ''Electoral Studies''. In 2013 he was appointed co-director of the British Election Study, the Scottish Referendum Study and the Northern Ireland Election Study. In 2016 he also became director of the EU Referendum Study. Embourgeoisement Thesis
Embourgeoisement is the theory that posits the migration of individuals into the bourgeoisie as a result of their own efforts or collective action, such as that taken by unions in the United States and elsewhere in the 1930s to the 1960s that established middle class-status for factory workers and others that would not have been considered middle class by their employments. This process allowed increasing numbers of what might traditionally be classified as working-class people to assume the lifestyle and individualistic values of the so-called middle classes and hence reject commitment to collective social and economic goals. Gordon Marshall (sociologist)
Gordon Marshall (born 20 June 1952) is a British sociologist and former Director of the Leverhulme Trust in England. Education Born in Falkirk, Gordon Marshall was educated at Falkirk High School, the University of Stirling (BA Sociology 1974) and Nuffield College, Oxford (DPhil 1978). Career Prior to joining the Leverhulme Trust, Gordon Marshall was vice-chancellor of the University of Reading, 2003–2011. He oversaw major advances in its teaching and research profile and the merger with the former Henley Management College to form Henley Business School. His period of office was also characterised by significant investment in University facilities, including the Minghella Building for the performing arts, the replacement of many of the University's halls of residence, and a new building for the Henley Business School.
