John Venimore Godwin
John Venimore Godwin was an early photographer and Mayor of Bradford in 1865-1866. Life Godwin was born on 23 December 1814 in Dartmouth. He was the son of the Reverend Benjamin Godwin and his wife, Elizabeth. His father was the Baptist minister in Dartmouth, but he shortly moved to Great Missenden. Godwin married Rachel and they had ten children. They lived in the 1847 rebuilt Micklefield House in Rawdon before moving to Crowtrees House. Godwin also owned the nearby Crow Trees Inn. He died at his home in Crowtrees on 20 January 1898 aged 83. Legacy John asked his father in 1832 when they were living in Oxford to write about his life. Over the next 18 years his father wrote over fifty letters which he gave to his son on his son's birthday 23 December 1855. These letters provided him and historians with an insight into the Baptists and the abolitionists. John Godwin (rower)
John Stuart Godwin (18 March 1904 – 22 June 1973), known as Jack Goodwin and later as Jack Stuart, was a British rowing coxswain and magician. Godwin was born in 1904 in Bromley, Kent. He rowed for Great Britain in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. He was affiliated with the Thames Rowing Club in Putney. He was coxswain for the men's eight. The Thames club won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1923, but only four members of that victorious crew, Ian Fairbairn, Godwin himself, Arthur Long, and Charles Rew, were present at the Paris Olympics. His team came in fourth in the Olympic competition. Godwin was again part of the Thames club team when they won the Grand Challenge Cup in 1927. John Godwin (Royal Navy Officer)
Temporary Lieutenant John Godwin, RNVR (13 December 1919 – 2 February 1945) was a British naval officer. Born and brought up in Argentina, he took part in a raid named Operation Checkmate on Axis shipping near Haugesund, north of Stavanger, Norway. His party managed to sink a minesweeper and a number of steamers using limpet mines, but he was eventually captured with the rest of his party, a commando sergeant, two Naval Petty Officers and three seamen. Initially they were held in Grini concentration camp. This was the same camp where, in January 1943, the Germans executed five commando survivors of Operation Freshman. However, Godwin and his comrades were not executed at Grini, but instead sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where contrary to the Geneva Convention, they were forced to march 30 miles a day on cobbles testing army boots.
