John Gerrard (police Officer)
John Henry Gerrard (25 November 1920 – 2 June 2003) was a British police officer with the London Metropolitan Police. Gerrard was the son of Archie Reginald Gerrard and his wife Evelyn.Biography, '' Who Was Who'' He was educated at Cordwainers' Technical College and enlisted in the British Army in 1939, serving in Iceland from 1940 to 1942. On 20 March 1943, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment and served with the 1st Battalion until he was demobilised with the rank of captain in 1946. He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) as a lieutenant on 1 March 1945 for gallantry in North-West Europe. In 1946, he joined the Metropolitan Police as a constable. St John Ambulance (England And The Islands)
St John Ambulance is a volunteer-led, charitable non-governmental organisation dedicated to the teaching and practice of first aid and the support of the national emergency response system in England. Along with St John Ambulance Cymru, St John Ambulance Northern Ireland, and St John Scotland, it is one of four United Kingdom affiliates of the international St John Ambulance movement. The St John Ambulance Association was founded in 1877 to provide first aid training. In 1887, the St John Ambulance Brigade was founded to provide uniformed medics at public events. The King's Police Medal (KPM) is awarded to police in the United Kingdom for gallantry or distinguished service. It was also formerly awarded within the wider British Empire, including Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, most of which now have their own honours systems. The medal was established on 7 July 1909 as the King's Police Medal (KPM), initially inspired by the need to recognise the gallantry of the police officers involved in the Tottenham Outrage. Assistant Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, usually just Assistant Commissioner (AC), is the third highest rank in London's Metropolitan Police, ranking below Deputy Commissioner and above Deputy Assistant Commissioner. Kevin Gately (18 September 1953 – 15 June 1974) was a second-year student of mathematics at the University of Warwick who died as the result of a head injury received in the Red Lion Square disorders in London; it is not known if the injury was caused deliberately or was accidental. He was not a member of any political organisation, and the march at Red Lion Square was his first. He was the first person to die in a public demonstration in Great Britain for at least 55 years.
