John G. Avildsen
John Guilbert Avildsen (December 21, 1935 – June 16, 2017) was an American film director. He is perhaps best known for directing ''Rocky'' (1976), which earned him the Academy Award for Best Director, and the first three ''The Karate Kid'' films. Other films he directed include '' Joe'' (1970), '' Save the Tiger'' (1973), '' The Formula'' (1980), '' Neighbors'' (1981), '' Lean on Me'' (1989), '' Rocky V'' (1990), and '' 8 Seconds'' (1994). Early life Avildsen was born in Oak Park, Illinois, the son of Ivy (''née'' Guilbert) and Clarence John Avildsen. He was educated at the Hotchkiss School and at New York University. Oak Park, Illinois
Oak Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, adjacent to Chicago. It is the 29th-most populous municipality in Illinois with a population of 54,583 as of the 2020 U.S. Census estimate. Oak Park was first settled in 1835 and later incorporated in 1902, when it separated from Cicero, Illinois, Cicero. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his wife settled in Oak Park in 1889, and his work heavily influenced local architecture and design, including the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio. Arthur Hiller Penn (September 27, 1922 – September 28, 2010) was an American director and producer of film, television and theater.
