John Frost (politician)
Sir John Frost (8 August 1828 – 2 April 1918) was an Anglo-South African landowner, cabinet minister and Member of the Parliament of the Cape of Good Hope. Early life Frost was the son of William and Maria Frost, landowners in Lincolnshire. He immigrated to the Cape Colony in 1849 where he built up an estate, Thibet Park, on the upper Black Kei River. He was one of the leading farmers in the Queenstown district and served as an officer in the Frontier Wars of the Eastern Cape, including the quelling of the Transkei Rebellion. Lady Frost, his wife, was born Frances Cordelia Powell (born 20 September 1834, died 20 October 1927). She was a niece of Colonial Secretary Richard Southey. Sir John and Lady Frost lived at their country estate, Thibet Park on the Kei River. They also had a house in Cape Town, Eastbrooke House in Rondebosch. They had three daughters and five sons. John Carver Meadows Frost (1915 in Walton-on-Thames, England – 9 October 1979 in Auckland, New Zealand) was a British aircraft designer. His primary contributions centred on pioneering supersonic British experimental aircraft and as the chief designer who shepherded Canada's first jet fighter project, the Avro Canada CF-100, to completion. He was also the major force behind the Avro Canada VTOL aircraft projects, particularly as the unheralded creator of the Avro Canada flying saucer projects. John Everitt Frost, (16 July 1918 – 16 June 1942) was a South African fighter ace during the Second World War. He was the highest-scoring member of a South African Air Force squadron during the war, credited with the destruction of 15 Axis aircraft. South African pilots with higher numbers of kills, such as Pat Pattle and Adolph "Sailor" Malan, were members of the British Royal Air Force. War time service Frost joined the South African Air Force (SAAF) in 1936, at the age of 18. By 1940 he had achieved the rank of captain, and was a member of No. 3 Squadron. East African Campaign In early 1941, the unit—flying Hawker Hurricanes—was dispatched to combat Italian forces during the East African Campaign. John Frost (1750–1842) was an English radical and republican, known as the secretary of the London Corresponding Society. Life Born in October 1750, Frost was educated at Winchester College, and became an attorney. In 1782 he was a prominent member of a group meeting at the Thatched House tavern in London, who advocated constitutional reforms. There his associates included William who corresponded with Frost on parliamentary representation, the Duke of Richmond, Lord Surrey, Lord Mahon, Major John Cartwright, John Horne Tooke, and John Wilkes. At the beginning of the French Revolution Frost adopted republican principles, and in 1792 sheltered in his house a number of political prisoners. Dr John Frost FRSE FSA (1803–1840) was a short-lived but influential physician and botanist who founded the Medico-Botanical Society of London, studying and cataloguing the medicinal properties of plants. He was a controversial and flamboyant figure of the early 19th century. Life He was born in 1803 in the Charing Cross area of London. He was born two months premature and a twin and was a delicate child. He attended school in Langley, Berkshire. He was then sent as an apprentice to Dr Wright, the apothecary at Bethlem Royal Hospital. In 1821 he left and resolved to establish a national study of Materia Medica, leading to his foundation of the Medico-Botanical Society of London. Having been introduced by Dr Bree to King George IV, he was placed as botanical tutor to Prince George of Cumberland and Cambridge (later to become George V of Hanover). Gallery The Early Birds of Aviation is an organization devoted to the history of early pilots. The organization was started in 1928 and accepted a membership of 598 pioneering aviators. Membership was limited to those who piloted a glider (aircraft), glider, gas balloon, or airplane, prior to December 17, 1916, covering the entirety of the Aviation in the pioneer era, pioneer era of aviation, and just over two years into Aviation in World War I, World War I. The cutoff date was set at December 17 to correspond to the first flights of Wilbur WWilbur and Orville Wright. 1916 was chosen as a cutoff because a large number of people were trained in 1917 as pilots for World War I. Rev. John Frost (22 October 1716 Kittery, Maine 13 July 1779, Argyle, NS; went to Argyle, Nova Scotia) was the first ordained Protestant minister in present-day Canada. (Ten months later Rev. Bruin Romkes Comingo was officially ordained as the first minister). The "irregular ordination" happened on 21 September 1769. Contrary to accepted practice, the ordination took place without the assistance or representation of any other church body or association. Two years earlier, on 18 December 1767, the Chebogue church (near present-day Yarmouth) chose Frost to be its minister. He was also one of two Nova Scotians convicted of sedition for joining the rebellion in the American Revolution. John Frost (born 20 May 1980) is an Irish professional footballer who last played for Waterford United in the League of Ireland In 2017 Frost returned to the RSC as a coach to Alan Reynolds. Early life At the age of five, Frost was run over by a car; he suffered a fractured skull, broken thigh bone and a broken right arm as a result. Career Frost first came to notice when nominated for the FAI's Schools Player of the Year in 1998. He was a regular in the Republic of Ireland youth teams by then and soon made his debut in the League of Ireland for hometown club Waterford United. His performances led Frost to being called into the Republic of Ireland under 21 squad.
