John Francis Hennessy
John Francis Hennessy (1853–1924) was an Australian architect practicing in New South Wales in the 1880s-1910s, concentrating on projects for the Catholic Church. Personal life John Francis Hennessy was born in Ireland about 1853, and grew up and trained in architecture in Leeds, and London. Deciding that there were more opportunities in Australia, he arrived in Sydney in 1880 and was soon appointed assistant to the city architect, where he worked on the Centennial Hall of the Sydney Town Hall in 1883. The family lived for many years in Burwood, where he designed the Town Hall in 1887, and was an alderman 1890–1895, and mayor in 1892–93. During his presidency of the Institute of Architects of New South Wales in 1911–12, the registration of architects was achieved. He helped to establish the chair of architecture at the University of Sydney and to secure the recognition of public competition for public buildings. Daceyville (formerly Dacey Garden Suburb) is a suburb in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Daceyville is 7 km south of the Sydney central business district and is now part of Bayside Council (formerly the City of Botany Bay). Daceyville is a quiet, leafy residential suburb, surrounded by the suburbs of Pagewood, New South Wales, Pagewood and Kingsford, New South Wales, Kingsford. The northern area of Pagewood was actually designed as part of the original Dacey Garden Suburb plan and is essentially an extension of Daceyville. In particular, many of the street layouts and park layouts in Pagewood remain unchanged from the original Dacey Garden Suburb plan. City Tattersalls Club
The City Tattersalls Club is a social club located in Sydney, New South Wales. The club was formed in 1895 by a group of bookmakers disgruntled with a judge's decision on a race at Kensington, New South Wales. The club named itself after the Tattersalls Club, Sydney, which was founded in 1858 and represented the horse racing establishment. The club is located in the heart of the central business district at Pitt Street between Market and Park Streets. History 'City Tattersalls Club started in 1895 with only 25 members, all bookmakers. The club began with only 50 guineas in the bank. On 26 April 1895, Merry Girl – at 6/1 - was the first horse past the post at Kensington. Although the five-year-old mare appeared to have triumphed, the stewards disqualified her because she turned the scales two pounds overweight and her jockey weighed in with his whip. Sacred Heart Monastery
The Sacred Heart Monastery in Kensington, New South Wales, is a monastery of the Catholic men's religious order, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSCs). Since its establishment in 1897 it has played a leading role in the Catholic life of Sydney. History The French order of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart had established a base in Sydney for missionary work in New Guinea in the 1880s. With the support of Cardinal Moran, they embarked on an ambitious building project on the hill that dominates West Kensington. The building was designed by Sheerin and Hennessy and completed in 1897. It is a large stone building in the Gothic style and features an attic storey and a prominent central tower. It also includes a brick chapel in a Romanesque-Byzantine style which was designed by Mullane and built in 1939, and which is joined to the monastery by a matching brick cloister.
