John Evans (archaeologist)
Sir John Evans (17 November 1823 – 31 May 1908) was an English archaeologist and geologist. Biography John Evans, son of the Rev. A. B. Evans, was born at Britwell Court, Buckinghamshire. At the age of seventeen he started to work for the paper-manufacturing business of John Dickinson & Co. Ltd at Nash Mills (Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire). The company had been founded by his uncle and later father-in-law John Dickinson (1782–1869), who was also its senior partner. In 1850 Evans was admitted as a partner in the company and did not retire from active management until 1885. Apart from his managerial work John Evans was also a distinguished antiquary, archaeologist and numismatist. This is a list of cricketers who played for Kent county cricket teams in first-class cricket matches before the formation of the first Kent County Cricket Club in August 1842. John Evans (cricketer, Born 1889)
Alfred John Evans (1 May 1889 – 18 September 1960) was an English amateur cricketer who played mainly for Oxford University and Kent County Cricket Club whom he captained in 1927. Evans also played for Hampshire and made one Test match appearance for the English cricket team in 1921. Evans served in both the First World War and the Second World War. During the first war he served in the Royal Flying Corps and was twice made a prisoner of war. He made persistent escape attempts, two of which were successful, and during the second war served in MI9 providing guidelines and advice for the escape of prisoners of war. He was also an all-round sportsman who enjoyed success in golf and racquets. Early life Evans was born at Highclere in Hampshire in 1889. John Edward Evans (April 1868 – 1942), also known as "Jammer", was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Bury, Burslem Port Vale and Stoke. Career Evans played for Newcastle Swifts before joining local league club Stoke in 1891. He had a decent debut season with Stoke scoring six goals during the 1891–92 season. Evans became the first Stoke player to be sent off, after receiving his marching orders in an away match at Everton on 12 November 1892. He recovered well from this set back and went on to score 10 league goals during the 1892–93 season, helping Stoke to achieve their highest league position to that point of 7th. He spent two more seasons at the Victoria Ground, but failed to hold down a place in the starting eleven. Jonathan Grant Evans (born 3 January 1988) is a Northern Irish professional footballer who plays as a defender for club Leicester City and the Northern Ireland national team. Evans started his career at Manchester United and progressed through the club's academy. John Charles Evans (born 24 March 1947 in Torquay) is an English former professional footballer and an international bowls player. Football career Evans began his footballing career as an apprentice with Torquay United, turning professional in April 1965.
