John Hawker English
Sir John Hawker English, M.D. (1788–1840) was an English doctor. He entered the employment of the king of Sweden as surgeon, and became surgeon-in-chief to the Swedish army. In recognition of his services he was decorated with the order of Gustavus Vasa in 1813, and, having received permission to accept it, was knighted by the prince regent in 1815. On leaving Sweden he graduated M.D. both at Göttingen (3 March 1814) and at Aberdeen (26 May 1823), being admitted a licentiate of the College of Physicians on 25 June following. Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). John Richard English (born January 26, 1945) is a Canadian academic and former politician. Career A native of Plattsville, Ontario, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967 from the University of Waterloo. He completed his A.M. (Master's) degree in 1968 and PhD in 1973 at Harvard University. He joined the University of Waterloo as a lecturer in history in 1972, becoming an assistant professor in 1974, an associate professor in 1978, and a professor in 1984. He received a D.Litt. (hon) from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1990. He served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Kitchener between 1993 and 1997. John Wilkinson English (25 June 1903 – 11 October 1969) was a British film editor and film director. He is most famous for the serial film, film serials he co-directed with William Witney for Republic Pictures such as ''Zorro's Fighting Legion'' and ''Drums of Fu Manchu''. He was credited variously as John W English, John English or Jack English. Career John English was born in Cumberland in the United Kingdom but moved to Canada at an early age. He first worked as a film editor before getting a break into directing at Republic in 1935. For a period in the 1930s and 1940s, starting with ''Zorro Rides Again'' (1937), he directed Movie Serials in partnership with William Witney. John English, OBE, MA (13 January 1911 – 20 December 1998), was a theatre director, actor, writer and entrepreneur in Birmingham, England, and the founder of the Highbury Theatre, the Midlands Arts Centre as well as being one of the founding members of the Little Theatre Guild of Great Britain. Early years John English was born in Dudley, Worcestershire (now West Midlands), on 13 January 1911. Son of Bertie and Emeline English; along with his sister, Muriel May and his brother, Bill.
