John Drobot
John Drobot (July 3, 1926 – January 17, 1998) is a former provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1982 to 1993. Political career Drobot ran as a Progressive Conservative candidate for the 1982 Alberta general election. He won the electoral district of St. Paul with a large plurality to hold the district for the Progressive Conservatives. He was reelected in the 1986 Alberta general election. He won that race with a significantly reduced plurality, as second place was closely contested by the Representative Party and the NDP. Drobot ran for his third and final term in office in the 1989 Alberta general election. The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is the deliberative assembly of the province of Alberta, Canada. It sits in the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton. The Legislative Assembly currently has 87 members, elected first past the post from single-member electoral districts. Bills passed by the Legislative Assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, as the viceregal representative of the King of Canada. 1982 Alberta General Election
The 1982 Alberta general election was held on November 2, 1982, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Less than four years had passed since the Progressive Conservatives won their landslide victory in 1979. Premier Peter Lougheed decided to call a snap election to catch fledgling new parties off guard, most notably the separatist Western Canada Concept which was capitalizing on anger over Lougheed's perceived weakness in dealings with the federal government, in particular his acceptance of the hugely unpopular National Energy Program. The WCC's Gordon Kesler had won a by-election earlier in the year, and Lougheed decided that it would be wise to stage a showdown with the WCC sooner rather than later. 1989 Alberta General Election
The 1989 Alberta general election was held on March 20, 1989, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Many political observers were surprised by the early election call as less than three years had passed since the previous election. Premier Don Getty, in his second election as Progressive Conservative Party leader, led it to its sixth consecutive term in government, although supported by less than half the votes cast in the election. Despite losing a significant share of the popular vote, the PC's benefited from a split vote between the two main opponents Liberals and NDP. Together those two parties received 55 percent of the vote to the Conservative's 44 percent. The Conservatives sustained a net loss of only two seats in the legislature. Paul Langevin (politician)
Paul Andre Joseph Langevin (January 15, 1942 – November 11, 2008) is a former provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. Political career Langevin first ran as a Liberal candidate in the St. Paul electoral district in the 1989 Alberta general election. He was defeated by incumbent Progressive Conservative MLA John Drobot. Langevin ran for the Liberals a second time and was elected to the Alberta Legislature in the 1993 Alberta general election winning the new riding of Lac La Biche-St. Paul. He won the riding defeating two other candidates in a closely contested race. In 1994 he left the Liberal caucus and sat as an Independent. On April 24, 1995 he joined the Progressive Conservatives giving up Independent status. He ran for a second term in office in the 1997 Alberta general election.
