John Doyle (rugby League)
John Doyle (born 31 July 1977) is a former professional rugby league footballer who played for the North Queensland Cowboys and the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League, NRL. Background Born in Rockhampton, Queensland. Doyle was educated at North Rockhampton State High School. John played junior rugby league for Yeppoon Seagulls. Playing career After retiring from football to live in Queensland, he signed a 1-year deal at the end of the NRL season 2005, 2005 season after Ricky Stuart contacted him to play with the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League. He signed for another year with the Sydney Roosters, however in late February (2007) during training camp he had decided to retire due to ongoing knee problems. Rockhampton is a city in the Rockhampton Region of Central Queensland, Australia. Queensland Maroons
The Queensland rugby league team represents the Australian state of Queensland in rugby league football. Nicknamed the "Maroons" after the colour of their jersey, they play three times a year against arch-rivals New South Wales in the State of Origin series. Coached by Billy Slater and captained by Daly Cherry-Evans, and is administered by the Queensland Rugby League. Breakers Stadium
The Gardens Greyhound & Sporting Complex is an Australian stadium located in Newcastle, New South Wales. The complex is known as Newcastle Greyhounds when it was used as a greyhound racing venue. It was the former home of the Newcastle Breakers FC, Newcastle Breakers, who played in the National Soccer League (NSL) from 1991 until 2000. It was also the home ground of the short-lived Hunter Mariners rugby league team, who participated in the only season of the Super League (Australia), Super League in 1997. The stadium is currently used by soccer team Wallsend FC. History The ground was primarily used for soccer, hosting the Newcastle Breakers FC, Newcastle Breakers during their tenure in the National Soccer League. It was later used by rugby league team Hunter Mariners. Hunter Mariners
The Hunter Mariners were an Australian professional rugby league club based in the Hunter Region's largest city, Newcastle. Hunter was formed in mid-1995 and was later disbanded at the end of 1997. The club was formed because of the Super League war, which was the rivalry between the traditional Australian Rugby League competition and the new media driven Super League competition. The team competed in the inaugural and only Super League season in 1997, as well as that year's World Club Challenge. The Mariners faced much adversity in the Newcastle region because of the Australian Rugby League's Newcastle Knights team being already well established in the region. The club played its home games at Topper Stadium and missed out on the finals of the 1997 Super League season, but made the grand final of the World Club Challenge.
