John Douglas (linebacker)
John Louis Douglas (born September 6, 1945) is a former American football linebacker who played for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). He was also a member of The Hawaiians of the World Football League. He played college football at the University of Missouri. Early years Douglas attended Columbia High School in Columbia, Missouri. He accepted a football scholarship from the University of Missouri, where he played only two seasons of college football because he left to work after his freshman year. As a senior linebacker, he was a team co-captain along with quarterback Gary Kombrink and received All-Big Eight honors. The Hawaiians (WFL)
The Hawaiians were a professional American football team based in Honolulu that played in the World Football League. They played two seasons, 1974 and 1975. Their records were 9–11 in 1974 and 4–7–1 in 1975. Their home stadium was Honolulu Stadium in 1974 and Aloha Stadium in 1975. The best known player to play for the Hawaiians was former Dallas Cowboys running back Calvin Hill, though quarterback Jim Fassel became better known as a head coach decades later. The Hawaiians head coach was Michael Giddings who guided the Hawaiians through both the 1974 and 1975 World Football League seasons. The franchise was originally going to be called the Honolulu Warriors, but a local team had trademarked that name. 1974 WFL Season
The 1974 World Football League season was the first season of the World Football League. Twelve teams began the inaugural 1974 season, which launched July 10 and lasted 19 weeks with no bye week. The league doubled up the week of Labor Day by playing four games over the course of three weeks on a Wednesday, Monday (Labor Day), Friday, Wednesday schedule, giving the WFL teams 20 games each. Two teams, the Detroit Wheels and Jacksonville Sharks dropped out and folded after fourteen weeks, with the New York Stars and Houston Texans relocating to other markets (Charlotte and Shreveport respectively) during the season.
