John Donald (Wisconsin Politician)
John Sweet Donald (January 12, 1869 – January 10, 1934) was a politician and dentist from the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Biography Born on a farm near Mount Vernon, Wisconsin in the town of Springdale, Dane County, Wisconsin, Donald graduated from Northwestern Business College in 1887, in Madison, Wisconsin. He then graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Valparaiso University in 1894. In 1897, Donald received a degree in dentistry from the Chicago College. He was Wisconsin's nineteenth Secretary of State, serving two terms from January 6, 1913 to January 1, 1917. He was a Republican and served under governors Francis E. McGovern and Emanuel L. Philipp. He resided in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin at the time of his election. He served as the Springdale town assessor in 1892. He served as chairman of the Springdale Town Board from 1899 to 1902. Springdale is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,056 at the 2020 census. The unincorporated communities of Klevenville, Mount Vernon, and Riley are located in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.3 square miles (91.4 km), all of it land. History The land that would become Springdale was first surveyed in 1832 and 1833. Settlement began around 1845, aided by good access via the Military Road. The Town of Springdale itself was established in 1848. The town was largely settled by the mid-1850s, filled with Americans from the Northeast and Midwest along with immigrants from England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and Norway. Demographics At the 2000 census there were 1,530 people, 570 households, and 441 families in the town. The population density was 43.4 people per square mile (16.7/km). John Sweet Donald Farmstead
The John Sweet Donald Farmstead is a historic farm in Springdale, Wisconsin with surviving structures built as early as 1858. It is significant as the home and testing grounds of John Sweet Donald, a farmer, statesman, and educator of the Progressive Era. With History Settlement of the Springdale area began around 1845. By the 1850s about 100 Scotch families were settled among other immigrants along the Sugar River. The Rev. James Donald, an immigrant from Scotland, came to serve the Presbyterian parishes at Mount Horeb and Mt. Vernon, and in 1855 he bought 80 acres in the country between the two churches, at the southwest edge of the Scotch settlement. He brought his wife Margaret Strong and three sons. For the first few years they lived in a temporary shelter northwest of the current house, which no longer exists.
