John Diehl (American Football)
John Albright Diehl (January 27, 1936 – December 28, 2012) was a defensive tackle in the National Football League for the Baltimore Colts and Dallas Cowboys. He also was a member of the Oakland Raiders in the American Football League. He played college football at the University of Virginia. Early years Diehl attended Frankford High School. After graduation he enrolled at Bullis School for a year. He accepted a football scholarship from the University of Virginia. He struggled during his college career, being injured as a sophomore and was out of school for scholastic reasons as a junior. He started at defensive tackle as a senior. Professional career Diehl was selected by the Baltimore Colts in the seventh round (82nd overall) of the 1958 NFL Draft with a future draft pick, which allowed the team to draft him before his college eligibility was over. Defensive Tackle
A defensive tackle (DT) is a position in American football that will typically line up on the line of scrimmage, opposite one of the offensive guards, however he may also line up opposite one of the tackles. Defensive tackles are typically the largest and strongest of the defensive players. Depending on a team's individual defensive scheme, a defensive tackle may be called upon to fill several different roles. These roles may include merely holding the point of attack by refusing to be moved, or penetrating a certain gap between offensive linemen to break up a play in the opponent's backfield. If a defensive tackle reads a pass play, his primary responsibility is to pursue the quarterback, or simply knock the pass down at the line if it is within arm's reach. 1958 NFL Draft
The 1958 National Football League draft had its first four rounds held on December 2, 1957, and its final twenty-six rounds on January 28, 1958. Both sessions were held at the Warwick Hotel in Philadelphia. This was the 12th and final year in which the first overall pick was a "lottery bonus". The Chicago Cardinals were automatically awarded the pick because it was the only team left that had not won the draft lottery yet. The Cardinals used the first pick to select quarterback King Hill. The Atlantic Coast Football League (ACFL) was a professional american football minor league that operated from 1962 to 1973. Until 1969, many of its franchises had working agreements with NFL and AFL teams to serve as farm clubs. In sports, the practice squad, also called the taxi squad or practice roster, is a group of players signed by a team but not part of their main roster. Frequently used in gridiron football, they serve as extra players during the team's practices, often as part of the scout team by emulating an upcoming opponent's play style. Because the players on the practice squad are familiar with the team's plays and formations, the practice squad serves as a way to develop inexperienced players for promotion to the main roster. This is particularly important for professional gridiron football teams, which do not have formal minor league farm team affiliates to train players. George Davis Peter Gent ( ; August 23, 1942 – September 30, 2011) was a wide receiver in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys. He became a novelist after his retirement, authoring the best-seller '' North Dallas Forty''. He played college basketball at Michigan State University. Early years Gent attended Bangor High School in Michigan, where he was a standout four-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball and track). In basketball he led the Bangor Vikings team to the 1960 state Class C Championship, while accumulating a 22.6 scoring average. The team was known as the Cardiac Kids for their late-game wins in District, Regional, Quarter-Final and Semi-Final games. Fred David Miller (born August 8, 1940) is a former American football defensive tackle in the National Football League from 1963 through 1972. During that span, he appeared in 3 world championship games for the Baltimore Colts: the 1964 NFL championship game against the Browns, Super Bowl III against the Jets, and Super Bowl V against the Cowboys. He played college football at Louisiana State University. Miller was born in Homer, Louisiana on August 8, 1940. His father was a sharecropper.
