John Dent Dent
John Dent Dent (11 June 1826 – 22 December 1894) was a Liberal Party politician in England. He was born John Dent Trickett, the eldest son of Leeds merchant Joseph Trickett, who had changed his surname to Dent (his mother's maiden name) in 1834 after inheriting Ribston Hall between Wetherby and Knaresborough in Yorkshire. John Dent Dent was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Knaresborough from 1852 to 1857 and for Scarborough from 1857 to 1859 and from 1860 to 1874. From 1880 to 1894 he was Chairman of the North Eastern Railway Company Board of Directors; significantly he took part in the Railway Inspectorate enquiry into the Thirsk Railway Collision of 1892, and when Signalman Holmes left the enquiry in tears, it was Dent who followed him out of the room to console him. Harcourt Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone, 1st Baron Derwent (3 January 1829 – 1 March 1916), known as Sir Harcourt Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone, 3rd Baronet, from 1869 to 1881, was a British peer and Liberal Party politician. He served for ten years as a Member of Parliament (MP), before becoming a peer with a seat in the House of Lords.Derwent at ''Burke's''. Sir Joseph Whitwell Pease, 1st Baronet (23 June 1828 – 23 June 1903) was a British Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1865 to 1903. Biography Pease was a member of the Darlington Pease family, being the son of Joseph Pease and his wife Emma Gurney, daughter of Joseph Gurney of Lakenham Grove, Norwich. His father was a Quaker industrialist and railway pioneer of Darlington, and M.P. for South Durham from 1832 to 1841. Pease was educated at the Quaker run Lawrence Street school in York, (which later became Bootham School). North Eastern Railway (UK)
The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Unlike many other pre-Grouping companies the NER had a relatively compact territory, in which it had a near monopoly. That district extended through Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland, with outposts in Westmorland and Cumberland. The only company penetrating its territory was the Hull & Barnsley, which it absorbed shortly before the main grouping.
